Soon-to-be new owner....2008 EX Journey AWD

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Greetings All-

Will be taking possession of an off-lease 2008 in a couple weeks, and am happy I've found this online community.

I've been lurking here the last couple of weeks, trying to read-up on these vehicles and their issues, etc. Recently, I've been traveling a good bit and renting G35's and 37's whenever possible, so when my wife's boss indicated she was getting ready to turn-in her EX, we jumped on it. She's completely OCD when it comes to her cars (like myself), and I know she's kept on top of maintenance, etc. This EX will be a nice upgrade over the 2005 Subaru Outback XT which we'll be getting rid of.

From my initial research, I'm happy to see these cars don't seem terribly problematic overall (I'm a long-time older BMW enthusiast, so I know "problematic" - lol!) but like all cars--seem to have their "quirks"....the most apparent seems to be "weirder-than-weird" tire sizes. And here I thought my Subaru's 225/55-17 was an uncommon size.

Just one question for now:
Why haven't more owners switched to a non-standard tire size, like a 235/55-17, to get more tire options? I realize this compromises the speedometer and a slight penalty in gas mileage, but the tire selections for stock 17" and 18" Infiniti sizes are horrific. Although not ideal, I've had good results running Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus tires year 'round in Western NJ on the Outback, so this will likely be the direction I proceed in.

Any feedback/advice would be welcome.

Cheers,
Tim G. in Central NJ

Tim, welcome to NICO

You should have little issues if any with the motor in the EX. It's a 14-time Ward's Best Engines winner and was put in the majority of Nissan and Infiniti vehicles in one configuration or another. Not saying there have not been some issues. As far as tire sizes, most people simply take them to the tire shop and have them replace what is there with whatever the tire shop deems the "tire of the day".

That made me curious, so I had a look at Tire rack. They have 25 different sets. GoodYear, Yoko, Pirelli, BFG, etc. Michelin Latitude is available.

You'll be alright.

Thanks for your comments Avalanche....

I've taken a look at my options in size 225/60-17 and there's no tires which I am a fan of. I'm sure I'm not the first person here who's considered deviating from stock size rubber--given the crappy selection in stock size, I'm surprised this isn't more common amongst the EX crowd. I admit for a crossover (albeit a well-powered one!), the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus is probably WAY more tire than necessary, but I just can't see putting a run-of-the-mill grand touring tire on such a great handling vehicle. Would totally ruin it, IMO.

Will keep you posted once I pull the trigger......

Tim

Well, you can set the Michelin Latitudes ablaze if you turn the traction control off.

Uh.....I mean.... that is what someone told me.
