Look at the M45X if you want something that's refined and a better all around car. All cars can have their issues, but comparing those two models is like night and day difference. I like both vehicles a lot, but if I had a choice between the two, i'd pick the M45.
I'll let some other people chime in that have more experience with the two, since I only owned older Maximas and Nissans, but here are some things to consider:
1. The Maxima will likely get you a lot better fuel economy. It's not going to be a huge difference, but if you're concerned about fuel economy, the Maxima may give you a little better highway economy. In the city, they probably won't be too far apart.
2. The Maxima has the CVT transmission, which are better now than the earlier models, but they still can have issues. They can also be a lot more costly to repair if/when they fail.
3. The Maxima is front wheel drive where the M45 is all wheel drive. The Maxima will do fine in most conditions, but you'll get better all around performance out of the M45. Sometimes AWD sacrifices fuel economy though, so that's another thing to keep in mind. If you do a lot of winter driving though, you'll probably be more satisfied with the M.
4. The M45 might have higher repair costs, but you also mentioned that you have no Infiniti dealership locally. Keep in mind that your local Nissan dealership can preform the work too. While they may not have parts readily available, they're perfectly capable of performing the work as well.
5. Putting aside the CVT in the Maxima, you will probably get plenty of life from both vehicles. The only things to keep in mind is that the Maxima probably has a lot less "bells and whistles" that will have issues over time. You will probably have less tedious things break on the Maxima, but if you don't plan to drive the car for 100k+ miles then that probably won't be anything that you have to worry about.
Finally, just keep in mind that any car can have issues, even if brand new. I just purchased a 2006 Ford Five Hundred a few weeks ago and two days later it broke down on the interstate. On the other hand, our 2006 Jeep has never had an issue since the day we purchased it and has been the best vehicle i've ever owned.
Good luck with your purchase and let us know if we can help any further. Hopefully someone will chime in soon to answer the rest of your questions.
