I have an old Sony CD changer, model EXCD-3RF, purchased in 1997. Was repaired once by Best Buy under extended warranty. Getting the ER-04 error message very frequently (used to happen now and then). Message means disc is dirty or upside down.

I found the Sony repair center on the web and it's $125 flat rate to repair, which isn't bad. Will probably just send it in.

But.... is there anything else I can try to fix it myself? All discs are clean and cartridge is clean. All discs are original and good quality, no CD-Rs (some don't work).

I've always gotten the message if I left the same discs in too long, but now it happens even after I change them out and move them around.

Any advice?

Mine was doing the same thing. I unplugged it and left it for a few minutes, then ran one of those lens cleaner discs through it (cost $12 at BestBuy).

Works like a champ now.

Thanks! Better than $125. I'll give it a try.
