Sonar Question From A New Owner

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

My Ex has RWD, Nav, Prem, Luxe, and Tech Packages. I do not have the Sonar off switch that I've read about in the manual. Consequently, the sonar only works when the AVM is on. Is that right? Seems odd since to go straight into my garage I would have to stop the car and activate the camera before the sonar can react.

Is it only AWD that has the Sonar off switch or is it the tech/nav combo that deletes that option and seemingly the ability to have the sonar activated at all times.

Thanks - I've learned much from this forum.

Welcome to NICO, Singer!!

You don't have to stop the vehicle to activate the AVM - just slow right down and the camera display and sonar will be activated. (If you hear a beep when you press the Camera button, that means you're still going too fast, so slow down some more and press the button again.)

Cheers,David

Thanks so much. The manual was not very clear on that point or I just missed it. That helps.

But, does anyone know if my assumption is correct that if you order the Nav and Tech Packages the sonar only works if the camera is on? I'm trying to make sure that my car came as supposed to. The dealer is checking with Infiniti as they are not certain.

I think the Tech package deletes the Sonar OFF switch because the AVM screen has a button you can press to disable the beeping. I just checked my car (which has the AVM) and you seem to be right that the sonar beeping only happens when the camera is displayed. That's a little disappointing, though I guess it only matters for the front view, since when you're in Reverse the camera is automatically displayed. And as dividedhighw mentioned, you can press the camera button while you're moving forward to display the AVM, if you're going slow (the manual says it won't be displayed if your speed is above 6 MPH).

Thanks sg77. I read the manual, tried every setting, and concluded it was either on purpose or left off my EX. You've answered my question.

My lease is up on my Cayenne which has front and back sonar (though no camera) that is always on. The tech on the EX is so far superior that I just assumed it would work like the Cayenne. Luckily, I only inched my EX up to the closed garage door to test out the front sonar.

Infiniti may want to make this situation a little clearer in future manuals. Regardless, love my car.

It has to be the tech package then that deletes the switch and allows the sonar to work only when the camera is on. Not sure that is a benefit, but I will just get used to hitting the camera button before I pull in frontwards. Would have been nice if "camera on" was an understood verbal command in the voice recognition system.

Thanks for checking.
