So, last night in a random spasm of futility, my computer sh*ts itself.
I was actually checking my email, and my computer locks up. I didn't get any response from the damned thing when I tried any kb or mouse functions; so I tried a soft reset. The computer didn't shut off. Odd.I then shut it off manually by flipping the PS switch in the back of the case. I give it a few minutes to cool off, just on the off chance it wants to be a finicky princess. I flip the PS switch back to the on position, green light on the board, I figure I'm good to go. I don't smell anything odd, nothing.Ha! I press the power button on the case, and..... all the fans start. So, I'm thinking that since I did a hard power down, the power supply is jacked up, or it's overloaded. But, the fan is running, so.. I decide to unload the board. I take off all the extra hardware I have, which is too much. Now, I only have 1 Video card, 1 SATA HD and the other regular stuff plugged into the board. The PS shouldn't have any issues running this little stuff. Turn on, same deal. Just fans.Okey dokey, I take out the CMOS battery. Restart, no dice. I clear the jumpers. Restart, no dice. I decide at this point to strip the board clean. Pwr cable, speaker cable, 24-pin and 4-pin cable. That's it, no processor, no ram, no video card, no nothing else. If it's even posting, it'll give me a bad processor/no processor beep code at that point, then I can say it's NOT the mobo at that point. Press the power switch... just the PS fan.So, my options are either a. the power supply or b. the mother board; obviously, I'm leaning toward the mother board since I'm actually getting a response from the fan and there's no smell or visual confirmation from the PS that anything is wrong.I end up going to bed last night, wake up this morning, using my cell phone internet to look up places to buy computer hardware. Very difficult to do, mind you, since apparently, these places just don't exist.
In the end, it was my mobo. I'm going to RMA it back to ASUS. This is the first time I've ever had an ASUS board die on me. But, what I want to know is; why in the name of everything that's holy do places ONLY sell Intel chipset mobos? Finding an AM2+ socket mobo that could support DDR2 1066 ram is next to impossible, at least, to purchase in person.
