So, last night in a random spasm of futility, my computer sh*ts itself.

I was actually checking my email, and my computer locks up. I didn't get any response from the damned thing when I tried any kb or mouse functions; so I tried a soft reset. The computer didn't shut off. Odd.I then shut it off manually by flipping the PS switch in the back of the case. I give it a few minutes to cool off, just on the off chance it wants to be a finicky princess. I flip the PS switch back to the on position, green light on the board, I figure I'm good to go. I don't smell anything odd, nothing.Ha! I press the power button on the case, and..... all the fans start. So, I'm thinking that since I did a hard power down, the power supply is jacked up, or it's overloaded. But, the fan is running, so.. I decide to unload the board. I take off all the extra hardware I have, which is too much. Now, I only have 1 Video card, 1 SATA HD and the other regular stuff plugged into the board. The PS shouldn't have any issues running this little stuff. Turn on, same deal. Just fans.Okey dokey, I take out the CMOS battery. Restart, no dice. I clear the jumpers. Restart, no dice. I decide at this point to strip the board clean. Pwr cable, speaker cable, 24-pin and 4-pin cable. That's it, no processor, no ram, no video card, no nothing else. If it's even posting, it'll give me a bad processor/no processor beep code at that point, then I can say it's NOT the mobo at that point. Press the power switch... just the PS fan.So, my options are either a. the power supply or b. the mother board; obviously, I'm leaning toward the mother board since I'm actually getting a response from the fan and there's no smell or visual confirmation from the PS that anything is wrong.I end up going to bed last night, wake up this morning, using my cell phone internet to look up places to buy computer hardware. Very difficult to do, mind you, since apparently, these places just don't exist.

In the end, it was my mobo. I'm going to RMA it back to ASUS. This is the first time I've ever had an ASUS board die on me. But, what I want to know is; why in the name of everything that's holy do places ONLY sell Intel chipset mobos? Finding an AM2+ socket mobo that could support DDR2 1066 ram is next to impossible, at least, to purchase in person.

I'm guessing because there isn't a large enough market for that to justify the engineering and all the other BS that goes into marketing an item. I don't know very many people that build their own computers. It HAS to be less than 1% of the total computer sales. Divide that up between all the different people competing for that business, and there enlies the problem.

Pricewatch.com is where I always go. Most of the time i end up ordering from newegg, or tigerdirect.I've never had an ASUS crap out on me, I have been ASUS and AMD ever since Intel tried that crap with the Pentium III chip where each chip was unique and traceable. Good luck.

(+1 for me getting that emoticon)

How was I going to order a motherboard with no internet access? Yeah, that is the question you all must now answer. I usually use newegg, by the way.

Nope, I am afraid you are mistaken.

I had a M3A32-MVP Deluxe mobo, by the way. Makes me angry, too.

Not what you want to hear, but dump the AMD proc.

I run an ASUS mobo, and have a $70 proc (E2160)1.8 Ghz that is OC'd to 3.6 Ghz.

$1000 worth of proc speed for $70.

I would consider it, because Intel is supported a lot more than AMD is. But, if I get NEAR an Intel computer, it dies.. like a drama queen.

^ I build my own comps and have generally used AMD. But my next box is probably going to be an intel unit.

Marenta, glad you found the problem at least.

I attract static energy fields and this is what kills computers that I work with generally.

Are you messing with the insides of said computers without using a static mat?

You then know absolutely NOTHING about computers. It is obvious from your beliefs in buying a "built package".

I built a PC for $600ish, that you can't touch in a "built package" for any less than $2000+.

Building a PC is cheap, if you know where to go, and what parts are good for the money, and are willing to push some of those parts to the extreme.

I use a grounding strap, and usually pull my hair back and do all my computer work barefooted, just on the off chance that I gather some crazy static charge somewhere.

You are nuts.. my computer (the one that died) was going to cost me around 6000 from Alienware to get built.. I built it for 1600. Fail.

No, I just looked up the word "cyber" on yellowpages on my phone in Newport News.. and I found a little hole in the wall that actually had a m-ATX board that would work, so I'm using that now until I can call ASUS Tuesday to get the RMA for my other board.

I can't get to the forums on NICO from my phone, it gives me a WML error. So, if I do go to NICO, I end up reading all the stories and stuff.. which, I've done now. So, you take what you can get.
