Hi everyone,

I just noticed recently that if I try to put the car in reverse while my foot is not on the brake pedal, the car will try to move like it does not have any breakes.

I know that I should never try to put the car in gear while my foot is not on the brake, but I am just curious if this mean I have something wrong with my brakes or parking brakes.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Geoff.

well if u are not on the brake pedal u should not be feeling the brakes. so really what are u tring to ask here. the brakes are not being used so there is no reason for the car to act as thogh u had brakes. the only thing that should prevent u from going into reverse is the shift lock and that has nothing to do w the breaks themselves. it is in the shifter handle

if you mean that that happens when the emergency/parking brake is on, then you will need to adjust your energency brake pedal, there is a screw that is right beside the parking brake pedal, you can adjust it with an elongated 12mm socket (i belive it is either 12mm, or 14mm)

but if you mean that you can change gears without pressing the brake then you have a problem with the shift lock, mine broke when i removed the shifter assy to change the selector (PRND321) light under there, i fixed it though, it is not hard to fix

note: the adjustment for the parking brake pedal would make the rear brakes hold tighter when emergency brake is applied

Sorry for the mistake, I should have used shiftlock. Yes, it does move if I try to put the car into reverse (although it does not actually go into the reverse gear). When this happens, I can see the white backup lights come on and the car will lose its shift lock a little and move forward.

I hope I explained it a little better.

Thanks,

Geoff.

sorry but u havent cleared up any thing. the shift lock is a switch in the gear selector that does not allow the selector to move from P until the brake is pressed. sounds like this doesnt work. if u r saying that u put the car into R from P and the engine dose not move the car then u may b screwed and need a transmission job or maby some fluid either way thats a bad situation. but if can find the reverse gear somwhere do the rest of ur gears line up ie N D 1 2? if not then u may need linkage adjustment if i havent described WTF is going on with ur car then im still confused as to what ur asking . so describe step by step what ur doing and what is happening

O.k.

Here's an example of what I did after I turned the car off one night, just to see what would happen.

Step-by-step:

1. I pulled into my driveway.2. I put the car from D to P3. I turned the car off and took my key out.

Here is where I just got curious for some reason and I'll explain why later.

4. While the car is off and the key out, I tried to move the shifter from P to D without my foot on the brake.5. I noticed that the white backup lights lit up and the car started rolling a little bit.

This is why I am concerned, because I noticed about a few months ago that while the car is on, if I don't use the brake to disengage the shiftlock, I can still change gears. In other words, If I don't have my foot on the brake, from park (P) I can change the shifter from P to R, N, or D (actually all of them).

I don't know what kind of problem I have, but I do want to fix it.

If these steps are unclear or if there are anything that you have questions about, reply and I'll let you know.

Thanks for trying to help me, Geoff.
