Last night I was hanging out with my gf, and my two friends. We wanted to get something so we have can have fun for the night so they sent me and my gf to get one half of the supplies and my other two friends to get the other. So I didn't know where the place was so I went in my friends G35 and on a rare occasion I let my gf drive. So the car was already on we were just sitting so my other friend got into the car w/ my gf so me and my friend take off and I start to spaze out bc I had my car key in my pocket so i'm thinking how can she drive and she's going to force the transmission from park to drive. So i'm calling her like crazy and she's not responding so i'm thinking wow she broke the transmission and she's not picking up bc i'll scream at her. Anyway after 8 times of calling she answers and she's already at the place and i'm like how are you driving when I have the car key? and she said idk so I told her to wait bc I don't want her driving and the car shut off while shes in drive and maybe mess up the car or more importantly hurt herself.

So after I gave her the key i'm trying to figure out how was it possible her to drive the car when we took off before her and we were 4 blocks away. I thought that if the key wasn't in a certain range you couldn't drive. Anyone have info?

Yes, once the car is on, you don't need the key to go in and drive it around. That's why when you're walking away the car with the engine still on, the car will beep a few times to remind you that "hey you left my engine on". I guess they should've made some security feature that locks the car out of gear when the key is not present but they didn't.

Man that really sucks. In the winter I turn the car on to warm up and go back inside but I shut the car off

If I remember correctly there was a story about a person on this forum that left the car on for the entire day while he was at work because he forgot to turn it off. He came on asking if the car was damaged mechanically or anything like that, but we just simply assured him he did nothing but waste some precious petrol.

So, no, I don't think the engine shuts off after a certain amount of time even at the absence of a key.

This is why I bought the LoJack from the Nissan Dealership. If I walk away with my Keyfob (I have both the Nissan Fob and LoJack Fob on the same keyring) and my car is moving without it in range, LoJack calls me on my cell, my home phone and sends me an email (which I get on my Blackberry), and then I can call the police and the sucker who has my car is as good as caught.

I rolled the cost into my financing plan, since I live in NYC, I figured it was worth it since I park on the street....

you can "technically" hot wire any car...the i-key is just another key, except that instead of a metal lock formation you have an electronic verification.
