hey all, I got my oil changed last week and when I went to pick up my car the mechanic told me that my front axle shafts are torn and need to be repaired. I haven't the slightest clue what these are, what they do, and how they're making the car ride (if they change/affect the ride at all). Can someone enlighten me? Also, they're quoting me about $500 for the repair; that's parts and labor. If anyone knows where I can go to get it done cheaper please let me know. I'd like to also know, like I said, what the axle shafts do, and how they affect the ride in the vehicle. Thanks in advance!

They are probably talking about your CV joints and dust boots. The CV joints (they're like miniature U-joints) are covered by a solid rubber boot. The boot protects them from dirt and moisture. After a while the rubber can split and tear apart, exposing the joint. This will allow water and dirt to get into the joints...not a good thing.I've seen boot kits out there that you can use to replace the old ones, but in most cases, it's better just to replace the whole thing.I can't tell you if the price you were quoted is fair though.I've never had to replace mine...yet.
