I have searched and searched, high and low, everywhere and anywhere but nothing has pleased me. I have a 1990 240sx hatchback (4x114.3 lug pattern) that I would like to put 17x7 35mm offset wheels on. Where could I find wheels in a 6 or 7 or 8 bar design and preferably with a dish that will acctually fir my car. As of now its stock height. I would like to keep the cost of the wheels(just the wheels) below a grand. Where can I find wheels? Who makes a wheel like this?

Ummm check out the offsets on all those wheels... 40, 38, 42. The only way to get the correct wheel through discount tire is to go into the store and pay outrageous prices for cheap wheels. A friend has 8 years experience at disount tire and says do not deal with them. thanks for your advice though but like I've said I've been to all the obvious sites.

A Google search for "17X7 35mm offset (wheel, rim)"

Returned several links like the one below.

Hope this helps

What would be the desired offset for 16" on an S13? It seems that most of the wheels are offered primarily for the FWD cars.

Well, probably 16x7 (maybe 16x7 front and 16x8 back) w/ coilovers or about a 1.5" drop. Tire size is flexible. The use would be mostly auto-x.

Thanks!

Thank you Rex. you've been the biggest help and that thread really helped.

But I still can't find an abundance of wheels that will acctually fit WITHOUT USING SPACERS. spacers are not only an easy way in using fwd offset wheels but they're very very very bad for driving your car. ie car shakes, unbalanced ride, so on and so on, we've all read about wheel spacers and how they should not be used.

Phil - The google search didn't turn up much?

I thought I at least saw some BBS or OZ Racing, but they may not have been the look or price you're looking for??

check out the 5 zigen fn-01's, or call up touge factory, etc...

a 16x7" wheel would do well in a 35mm offset, maybe a bit lower if you can find it.-chet

I'm no authority, but like Exar Kun suggested the only 17x7's I've found in your price range with the 35mm offset were the 5zigen fn01r-c's. What sucks is not all places have them with the 35 offset. Try http://www.hopupracing.com. VEry reasonably priced if you don't live in CA.

Haven't seen any 6+ spoked wheels with correct offset in that price range. It seems you've either got to pay more, go 5 lug (I've seen some 5x114's with 32-35mm offset), or settle... but again, I'm no wheel guru...

The 5 zigens are the only reasonably priced wheel I've found that will fit the s13 in a 17" without using spacers or modiffying the body dramatically. The five bar design is very basic but undoubtedly sweet. However follow what rex said I've found some advan wheels that are more what I'm looking for but... big but... they're priced almost twice what I wanted to spend. I found them here

http://www.eccentric-motorsports.com/Wheels.shtml

They seem to have several wheels that look like they'll fit in the design I'm looking for. Finding out the details on these wheels in an email. If they're not what they seem then of course theres good ol' http://www.ebaymotors.com to buy the 5zigens for around $600. But I know Advan are good wheels so I'm keeping my fingers crossed and possibly doubling my wheel budget.

Its been days and no return email from that company (sorry mrbean). However I found another site that sells advan wheels and ofcourse other brands... ssr, work, volk... nismo wheels too.

http://www.gruppe-s.com/index.htm found this site on the forum

But after long consideration I'll probably be purchasing Chet's suggestion and thats the 5zigen fn-o1's. Just more within my budget and the 5-bar design doesn't look bad at all. 17x7 front 17x8 rear. Or 17x7 all around. Any suggestions which set up would ideal for daily driving without having tire wheel problems down the road. I was thinking on the 17x7s running 215/40 yokohama avs es100 and on the 17x8s running 245/40 yokohama avs es100. I live in the always raining Houston, texas area, and if its not raining then its hot. Eventually I'd like to lower my s13, not sure on the height as of yet.

THat's almost my exact same setup. I have 17x7 5zigen fn01r-c's all around with 205/40/17 avs es100's. 215 would fit fine. It's been raining pretty hard here (for California) and they run just fine. Good grip, not noisy.

Concerning lowering, I have about a 3 inch gap :icon18 between tread and fender well (see link in sig), so some lowering should probably be in order...

I know the avs's are good tires. My friends, one with an s14 and another with a 318is bmw, both have these tires on their cars and I noticed a huge difference even riding in either car with the tires installed as apposed to their last set of tires.

Will the 17x8 with 245/40s be good to have in back? Is the extra money to have the width stagger be worth it? the tire footprint would probably be about an inch or so larger than the front with 215/40s in front. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that though.

the footprint does not get larger, it gets wider. the overall area stays the same, and a 245 is pushing it on a 8" wide wheel, especially a 40 aspect ratio, try a 235-40-17(its close to stock rolling diam. too!)I dont think many people can really figure out when to use a split setup. Its not like many people think "oh it handles better with wider tires in the rear"..most of the time a car WONT...especailly lighter cars. a bmw m3 actually does better with the SAME SIZE all around that the stock split setup for racing purposes(autcorss, road racing, etc)

just a thought.

Thanks for the advice Chet, as always your input is always highly respected. The only reason why I opted for the width stagger was b/c of 5zigens fitment guide on their website.

http://www.5zigenusa.com/wheels.html

It says 17x7 front and 17x8 rear for the s13. Doing my homework before I buy though.

I think the guys at tirerack will be happy to know that they are cheaper than competitors on the tires I want. Website prices anyways.

Will the 215/40s on 17x7s clear coilovers? Possibly the Tein flex setup.

17x7 35mm offset with a 215-40-17 will clear coilovers. you can use a split setup if you'd like, it is your car after all. I just think spiliting tires sizes is a mis-used tool to modify handling characteristics.

a 215 front and 235 rear on 7" and 8" wheels would work nicely, if you wanted to split them.

Considering it'll be a daily driver and I will have to buy tires occasionally for it. Maybe even rotate the wheels front to back to evenly wear tires... if needed. Thinking in the "daily driver" mindset, I'm leaning more towards your hinted suggestion Chet.

215/40s on 17x7 5zigen fn-01s all the way around. Total price I'M looking at (guestimated) about $1,200. Mounting and balancing the tires myself and ordering everything online. Possibly alil more due to lug nuts and vavle stems, that I will know when I physically recieve the wheels.

Exar-Kun:

What do you think about 16x7 front and 16x7.5 rear with a 38mm offset? Would they clear coilovers and 26mm calipers?

I was also thinking about 16x7 w/ a 40mm offset.

get the 38mm offset, those should be "ok" for most setups, but it will depend on the coilovers diameter and tire size you plan on running. I think you mean 26mm calipers if I recall correctly. with a 16" wheel, you cant really tell, its got more to do with the wheel dsign(spoke and inner edge) than offset to an extent. but yes, a 16x7" 38mm will fit the front, but if you run a wide tire it amy scrub coils. the rear will fit fine.

-chet(you may want to run a 205-55-16 and 225-50-16 front and rear..that would be a good split setup if thats what you want...but I dont think you really need a split setup unless you've already done suspension tuning and decided the best route to go is a stagered wheel and tire setup)

You're right: 26mm, I got the 4 from the 4mm difference.

Haven't decided yet, prolly some nice shiny ones though, lol, j/k. Thats cool about the valve stems, cuts in hassles alil bit. I'll start looking for lugs when I get the wheels and buy the same day I mount the tires on the wheels... unless I need to order them... basically I dunno what kind or brand or anthything. Any suggestions on brand? What kinda style am I looking at?
