now, maybe this has been going on for a long time, i dont know because i normally have my stereo blasting on high and usually the windows all winded up. anyway this morning, i noticed a close to faint ringing bell noise when driving my Q.

i mean, what could this possibly be? the car operates perfertly fine and it doesn't stall or nothing but this bell like sounding noise is starting to scare me. it gives the impression that something may be loose. i poped the hood, looked at it and from my lil inexperienced perspective, i dont think i saw anything lose.

also, does anyone else with a 1999 Q45 notice a slight knocking sound from the engine?? i checked mine out and it seems to be coming from the fan that's blowing on the engine. i dont know.

also, maybe this might help, only as of lately did I start doing between 80 and 86 miles per hour. maybe something tore up (which i wouldn't expect after infiniti just did a 60,000 mile maintenance on the car just 3 months ago)

Worst possible scenario is that your engine was knocking and broke the end of a spark plug off which is now making a bell sound as it goes up and down inside of one of your cylinders causing havoc to the internals of your motor... so that's the worst possible scenario. The best possible scenario is that someone through a bell at your car which bounced off something and hit your radiator fan (slightly bending it creating the knocking sound) and then got lodged somewhere else in your engine.

Both possibilities stand just as great of a chance at being the cause of the noise... aka slim to none.

BTW, your sig says your Q has 173k miles, did you mean 73k?

All the best,

Corey

the engine has been knocking on and off for a while now and each time i took it to the dealership or any other shop for that matter, they never said anything was wrong with it.

i currently have about 178,700 miles on the Q now. i mean, i goto drive this car to work today (40 miles each way). i'm not gon have the chance to take it to a shop until tomorrow morning, i mean, is this remotely a safe thing to do???

If it's running OK, it's probably spark knock (detonation)... do you notice it under any particular conditions, like lugging it up hills, or heavy loads? I don't think an electrode fell off of your spark plug since you'd have a dead miss on that cylinder and some real driveability issues.

Your bell noise could be just about anything... loose exhaust heat shield, loose suspension component, etc.

i'm starting to get the impression its coming from the tires. maybe bell like noises isn't the right phrase to describe it. probably the sound of steel rubbing on each other is what may be able to describe.

i took it over to a non-infiniti shop. they looked at it, took off the front tires and came back and told me something about a disc being misplaced or something like that. anyway, they "said" they fixed it, gave me my keys back and didn't charge me a dime.

on my way home, while driving slowly down a downhill road, i began noticing the sound again. i mashed on the brakes immediately and the sound was gone. i step on the gass again and the sound came back up.

Almost sounds like brake dust covers rubbing on the rotor. That could cause that type of hollow bell sound.

There are dust shields, taht could be loose. Those would be the right thickness to make a dinging like that...

I bet the fan is bent or the shroud is messed up.....

What I was talking about with the shield rubbing on the rotor or against the rim is not life threatning. Simple to bend it back. remove the front wheel and see if the brake sheild is bent at all. If so bend it back. It's just a piece of aluminum.

I had that happen on my old Toyota Camry.

Well I'm glad they found it! Darn things always seem to land in the flutor valve nook. I *really* hope you misheard them. If not, don't go back.

Oh, my guess (they're all pretty much guesses) is a bad (or loose) idler pulley bearing, except the noise would be coming from the front of the engine, and I doubt it would cease when you hit the brakes.

I took it to infiniti, they looked at it came back and told me i need rear brakes is what i think that said. anyway, t hey fixed it and i dont hear the noises any more.

btw, i just had all four tires replaced on my car and i have to admit, the drive feels good. when am speeding it feels like i'm in mid air or something. i love it. the tires cost me $832 tho including the warranty i bought with it (not at infiniti)
