JDM motors will be allowed for swapping if you can prove (through blueprints, tests, paperwork, etc...) it is practically the same engine. Type AWRRR anyone?? That's why Hondas get away with it.

Back with USDM motor swaps, you can have an H22 powered CRX and it would be PERFECTLY LEGAL IN CALIFORNIA. Was the H22 ever offered in a CRX in America? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

But it IS from a newer car, it fits the same classification, and if they included all the emissions related equipment, it's LEGAL!!!!

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOGMOGM asdfjakjsdlgakjl;ahgjdsgk

Seriously, you guys are smog techs!?!??!

Here's a company based in California that even does legal engine swaps.http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pag....html

As far as I know, California has the strictest emissions laws in the US if not the entire planet, so this should be even easier in other states. The only issue left, is are the RB motors legal now since they started importing Skylines? (Jeeeeeeeeeeeee how are THOSE guys gonna smog their car in California???)

Sorry if I'm coming off as an ***... I even edited the explitives out of this post. But you guys are spreading around WRONG information. If it's me that's wrong, feel free to put me in my place.
ok first my post clearly states I am not a smog tech, I took the class and have the qualifications except the state exam. Ok now for clearing up this

1. the everyday smog tech does not issue BAR stickers those are given by referee's which have more training.

2. as for the JDM engines, I email the ARB directly, and was instructed that no crate motor or JDM engine is legal in a Ca vehicle.

3. the H22 in a CRX will FAIL A VISUAL INSPECTION. Pretty much if the smog tech notices it has a motor swap with no referee label, boom it goes to the referee or its failed.

4. Just cause you think you may be right dont go around thinking your **** dont stink. We are all people out there, EVERYBODY makes mistakes. Get over yourself

I talked with my loca emissions guy in GA.and asked ought right:I'm swaping my 4 cyl for a 6cyl turbo.would you have any problmes passing my car if I kept all the emmissions stuff hooked up and running. He said:"No. *** long as there is no check engine light, and it passes the sniffer."and there is no "Hook Up" here just plain joe blow.if I drove in with a 240 with a RB26 in it working fine.It would pass. no prob.PS, Thank God I don't live in Cali. LOL.

Well, in Louisiana here is how my inspection goes:

I gave them proof of insurance, my license, registration, and ten dollars. Then they give me a new sticker. Then I drive away.

yep, in louisiana, with the exception of 5 parishes, there is no inspection of the drivetrain at all. The 5 parish emissions test is a joke, they make sure ur gas cap doesn't leak. Sniffers don't exist in Louisiana. Pills: do i know you? Ever went to the level before it closed?

I wouldn't trust that guy at all. When he hooks(using whatever his preferred method is) to get a tach signal, the computer will be using a 4 cylinder signal. Because the rpms will be reading higher, it will probably fail just from this because it will never see an acceptably low idle. Not to mention the fact that if he enters into the computer that the motor is a 6 cylinder, then the state is coming after you. So you had better make sure he understands that you want the car entered as a 2.4L 4 cylinder motor.

For OBDII cars there is a whole different set of issues. And as of right now, there is no option to pass sniffer if you fail the OBDII check.

In the state of Iowa or well in the town that I live in only cares if you got a muffler or not.Don't forget you got to have a front and rear bumper on cars that is.So I don't have to worry about putting in a different engine. So I guess I am lucky since the state don't do a engine check on any imports that I know of and don't care if your car smells like bad eggs.

So basically what you guys are saying is that basically unless you know your local emissions guy/girl, if you do an engine swap (except in the states that don't give a rats ***) you are driving around in an illegal vehicle. So having said all this, if it is illegal to have an RB or SR swapped in then why are shops still allowed to do the swap? As far as the revs being different in a 240 with a swap, consider this if you were to build up your engine (ie performance cams, stroker kit and/or upgraded ECU, don't your revs change? also if you have an 89 w/ a SOHC and do a DOHC swap wont your revs change as well?

Basically if you change your engine configuration in anyway and the tester is against it your screwed. It all boils down to your state and local DMV laws.
