It's a 1990 hatch ka24e 180,000 and it's been running fine up to this point. I need this engine to run because I need to get inspected before I put in my SR.

I went and started it this afternoon and it was fine pulled it out of the garage drove up and down the road a few times til the car was at operating temperature. Turned the car off and tried starting it again, but it just cranked over a lot of times. I kept trying to start it playing with the throttle and it finally started but ran like **** if i didn't have my foot on the gas it would have stalled.

So I get it started and keep my foot on the pedal for a few seconds and slowly bring it down to idling rpms and then I can let go of the pedal and it will idle okay, but still a little rough. Now if I just barely tap the gas the engine will die, but if I step on it it will go all the way to 7k.

I checked all the plugs and they all spark (I got shocked pretty good )Checked the mafs connection and tried unplugging it while the car was idling, but it just died.

So I brought it in and let it sit for 2 - 3 hours went back outside and it started up perfect first try. Drove it again down the road 2 - 3 times and turned it off. Started right up, but stalled on me again. Did it again and same thing. So I started it again and put my foot on the pedal and slowly brought it down to idle and it stayed running.

Anyone know what this could be? I tried searching

Only upgraded thing on this car is a walbro pump. Pump turns on fine with ignition on and I can feel fuel flowing through the lines

Dont you need some kind of FPR with one of those?

Yeah, the only info I can find similar to my situation is dealing with some type of fuel pump issue.

But I don't understnad how it could be a fuel pump relay or something related. I can clearly hear the pump prime when ignition is on

you have 4 things to check. Spark, which you said you already did, but make sure its sparking at all times. Your maf could be sending out bad signal (I just dealt with this one) and therefore you could be dumping too much fuel. If it pops and kinda sputters your rich, if it pops loud and sounds real lean like not wet at all then your lean. Theres an idler valve and such that affects the idle in the cold and normally. It is under the intake runners.

Hmm, well when I rev the engine anywhere from 650 - 4000 I get puffs in the exhaust or little sputters and you can feel and hear them. After 4000 rpm it feels smoother and no more sputtering. Seems like it's running rich.

After it's been started up for a second time if I just barely tap the gas the rpms drop a couple hundred to where it almost dies if I don't let go. To get the car moving I have to let the clutch go around 2k, but the engine is still sputtering and running badly
