I am pulling my ka24de motor out of my 91 because it has low compression in the 3rd cylinder and im going to take it to a shop for them to run a leak down test. If the piston needs to be replaced I am thinking of just buying lower compression pistons, if all else is in good shape. Is there anything else I will need besides pistons if i safely want to be around 300whp? Should the motor be rebuilt? the odometer now reads 94,xxx miles, but who knows for sure.. I want my budget to be below buying a sr20, so if its possible let me know what im getting into. thanks

Well, if youre trying to beat the cost of a SR swap, a complete rebuild might be out of the question.

But these guys can tell you more about your rebuild options.

Pistons should be all you need for 300whp. Just get everything checked out while you're in there. Look for play in the bearings and traces of wear. Also check out the oil pump. Look at the gears for wear and if necessary, replace them. A rotating assembly balance isn't a bad idea either. Change the timing chain too. Its much easier with the engine out of the car.

How do wrist pins usually work out with aftermarket pistons on stock rods? Any problems or modifications needed?

You should be able to run 300 hp on stock pistons if you get it tuned safely.

well i will pulling the motor out sometime next week, any advice where to disconnect the transmission from? Also if anyone feels like making a price list on what it will cost me and what parts i will need, it would be appreciated.. Also if it isnt necessary to rebuild the motor if i will stay around 300whp it will save me money and thats what im looking to do..If i need to replace pistons i might as well go with aftermarket ones, does that make sense? thanks.

The only forged low compression pistons for the KA are .020 overbore. So, now you're looking at the cost of boring added to the mix, and hope they do it right.

KA stock internals will hold 350whp no problem, SO LONG AS YOUR TUNING IS GOOD.

I say, depending on what the tests show, re-ring it, new valve stem seals, new rod and main bearings and rock on.

350 is plenty for me.. If you say stock pistons can support that. So you say to put new rings, valve stem seals, and rod bearings and main bearings, any idea what those parts will cost me? Also can you recommend a good size turbo, manifold, wastegate, etc. I already have a place im bring the motor too, so i just want to get some numbers. Thanks

Dunno about the rebuild cost, but a good all around size for decent power is T3/To4e. Seems to be popular.
