hi i'm a newbie 2 da forum and a HUUUGGEEE maxima/i30/i35 fan.i have some questions:my homy has a 96 maxima gle and was thinkin' about either turbochargin' da vq30de or swapping a vq35de into it to make it faster.can anybody tell me which is da better move.and what sort of mods will have 2 take place in order to swap this engine.also is it possible to fit a six speed from da 2004-05 maxima into da 96??another question is can da interior(dashboard etc.)fit into a 95-99 maxima?lastly, my uncle jus' bought a 95 maxima a few weeks ago and da shift gives alot of trouble 2 move from park position.can anyone tell me what could be da problem there??

thanks alotdatsun b310

The turbo setup will give your buddy more power than the 3.5L. Here are a couple turbo kits available for the 3.0L. These kits are only recommended with a 5spd, due to the automatics not being able to handle the increased power.http://www.turbo-kits.com/maxima_turbo_kits.html

I haven't heard of anyone swapping the 3.5 from the 04-05, but there have been some people that use the 3.5L friom the 02-03. You will need the ECU and the wiring harness to be able to make everything work.

I kind of doubt that the interior would fit, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

Have you uncle check the shifter mechanism (in the center console) to make sure nothing is interfering with it. Also check the shifting mechanism on the front lower side of the transmission next to the radiator and trace it back as far as he can to make sure nothing is binding the cable.

if you swapped in the VQ35 then you'd be able to use the six-speed from the newer cars. otherwise no. i'm not completely sure, but i'd assume that since the 35 is a bigger engine with more power, it's using a transmission that can hold up to a lot of power and also that has a larger mounting point (better mechanical advantage for the bolts holding the transmission on, fits bigger clutch/flywheel assembly for better power handling, etc.)

so i doubt you'll be able to use the new six-speed.

but a 5-speed that's designed to fit a VQ30DE would definitely be a go.

So it is not possible to fit it on an automatic, even if you lower the PSI??

Since the AT is bigger in size than the 5 spd, you'd probably have to modify all the piping; because the kit is designed so that the turbo sits directly above the transmission.

I just don't see the logic of spending that kind of money for the kit, modification, and installation only to run on a couple pounds of boost. But that's just my opinion.

Plus, for the cost of changing all the piping, VB mod, and transmission fluid cooler would probably pay for a 5sp swap in the first place.
