Just wanted to say hi to everyone on this forum. This will be my first post. I just purchased my 1991 240sx about 3 weeks ago. Everything seems to be in good working condition. Car has about 125,000 miles and is a 5 speed manual. Whenever I shift from first gear to second gear I hear a cranking noise. Sounds like something grinds in there for a quick second. I've asked a few friends and they said it might be from me not stepping on the clutch all the way but I try stepping on the clutch all the way and the same noise is still there. This happens about 65% or the time. This problem only happens when I shift from 1st to 2nd gear. When I down shift from 3rd to 2nd gear there is no noise. Could it be a bad transmission?

My last problem is when I drive about 50+mph my car shakes a bit. Do I need a wheel balance or could it be something else?

start with a wheel balance, if not you may have radial runout.

is the trany noise a quick buzz sorta or just a clunk

yea the noise is like a clunk. I can feel it not going in smooth. Feels like something is stuck. What can i do to fix this? Also what is a valve adjustment? Can I do a valve adjusment myself? thanks

the shimmy....check your tire balance.check your tires.check your brake pistons and make sure they're not freezing like mine. older pistons tend to stick and dont retract as easily.

the transmission...buy a transmission, easy to replace, easy to afford. a synchro (prolly brass) is a toothed device that matches engine to transmission gear rotation to allow smooth engagement. when you "grind a gear" you're usually grinding the synchros.
