my timing chains have been rattling like madmen. Decided I was gonna stop driving it and fix the fugger. I have my GTI so no big deal. Anyway I did some looking around and found all the info I needed to get started. Pulled the valve cover

the infamous upper guide

then I pulled the upper guide off

Is it just me or is the guide just a piece of metal? Was there originally some sort of lining on these things? Mine had some slight grooves in it.

The I pulled the upper timing chain cover and dist off

here is the lower guide I pulled off. Much deeper grooves in it. i think it was the one causing all the noise I was hearing. Again is this just a piece of metal designed to chew into the chains?

well I'm gonna finish watching Overhaulin and cleaning up the upper chain cover mating surfaces and get this thing back together so it can set up tomorrow. Hopefully I can come home from work tomorrow, fire her up and not hear any more chain noise! on a side note my tensioners seem to be working good....

good stuff. Mine was rattling bad, so I pulled my cover to find the top guide had broken apart. It seperated at the end right at the bend before it bolts to the head. I bet my lower guide as broken too, need to pull the front off one of these days.
