Over the past year I've been enjoying the experiences behind the wheel of my 1995 J30. I've repainted her, added some chrome BBS wheels with the necessary tacky tires, and am currently trying to fix her rattling sound sysytem. This is where I need some help. Over the past few days I ve discovered that if you are the owner of some busted Bose products, you're going to get raked over the coals. To make a long story short, I'm not going to spend several hundred dollars for two new amplified rear speakers, especially since the individual amps of my two current rear Bose speakers are fine. I'm hoping one of you would be able to tell me what the ohm-rating of my current Bose rear deck 6x9's. Bose won't tell me anything.

I'd like to just buy a pair of new, non-Bose, higher quality 6x9's and rig them to the current individual speaker amps. I'm not looking to rehaul the sound system since I'm hoping to get my hands on a newer Infiniti -- for which I would them splurge on an upgraded sound. Can you help? Thanks

I'm new to this posting stuff. I don't know where this "Driving Mom's Car" came from. Pretty funny though.

Do a search on Bose. The Bose systems are unique in that the amplifier is in each speaker unit and equalized to that speaker design. Therefore, the had unit will not drive conventional speakers.

Repair for a reasonable rate is possible, as you will find in the posts.

"Mom's Car" goes to "Hubcaps" after a few posts.

I have heard, that they are 2 ohm. I do nto know for sure, but I replaced my '94 6 x 9 speakers, with some Sony $50.00 X Plode speakers, and re-used the amps. They sound fantastic!

I have 12 months use, so far, and no problems.

Every time I mention this to a stereo shop, they all warn me about compatibility, but the Sony speakers seem prety bulletproof. They say they can handle 2 ohms.

I got them off of Crutchfield.com

Wow. Thanks for the help. I will follow the suggestions provided. It is chill to find some enthusiasts. I will try to snap some pictures of the car once I get the front and rear bumpers repainted. Unfortunately, I live in NYC and a#@holes around hear think its a bumper car convention when they're getting out of parking spots. Anyhow, I'll get her repaired and keep her at the 'rents house in Long Island.

Again thanks ... I'll seriously think about giving those Sony's a try.

I can certainly sympathize with the frustration.

However a few comments from an audiophile.

For less than several thousand dollars you aren't going to get a system that sounds better in your car than the Bose.

Now, of course at the momment even a boom box in the back seat might sound better, but the original sound of the bose was superb.

Bose engineers worked with Nissan and customized the system, taking into account lots of factors - the hardness of the leather seats, the volume of air in the car, the resonance of the car, etc and then "ran the pinks" to design the system.

Further maxnix is right, any speaker besides that specific model will sound terrible (to an audiophile or concert musician anyway) with the equalizer setup of the customized amps.

If by "higher quality" speakers for the rear you mean ones that can handle more bass without perforating ... well that's a differnt story. If volume is the main concern, not fidelity then throw in a pair of sony's. It's a lot cheaper.

well...if youre gonna get some aftermarket speakers i wouldnt suggest sony but if theyre compatible maybe thats the only choice. I recently replaced my whole bose system with infinity kappas and a new kenwood headunit. It sounds great now...100times better than stock. If you would like i can sell the rear 6x9s for pretty cheap since I have no use for them. Theyre still in great working condition and have only been out for about a month. Just let me know. If you have the money and like car audio...redo the whole system.

Forecast, I'm going to have to disagree with you. I took the factory Bose head and speakers out of my Maxima and replaced them with an inexpensive Sony head and some cheap Pioneers, and the quality level was substantially better.

Take the 6x9's out of your back deck and look at them sometime. They are cheap junky cardboard speakers. No tweeter, no midrange, just cheap paper cones. Bose markets the hell out of themselves, but their product is substandard. Their reliability is extremely suspect, and they set up their system so that they are difficult to replace.

point taken about the marketing.

with bose, the money is in the amp. A higher fidelity sound can actually come from a single cone than a complete set of three or four way speakers. Why don't you believe this is - experience says otherwise. However you should note that the multiple speaker design predates sophisticated electronics that could make enable a single cone to sound pure. The rube goldberg design has become the standard.

This applies in lots of fields - why do we have still have tint adjustments on our TVs? because engineers in the 30's had to work with the tools at hand and the design became standard for the next 70 years.

before you assume that so an so setup is better than stock, be sure you are comparing apples to apples.

Sure, a brandnew setup will sound better than a five year old stock. Not only do the speakers get stiffer, but the electronics in the amps start to sublimate ... all creating a slow but steady degration of the system over time.

Make a CD of music of your choice, collect samples of the entire range of music you like. Go to your infinti deal and ask to test drive a Q45 - see if the radio has the same watt rating as your setup. or look for a 300W BOSE. Pop in your CD and listen. After about 20 min go back to your own car - at that point you are qualified to determine what sounds better.

There is a lot of truth in that statement. but I happen to have 12 years experience as a concert musician, and played a few years of jazz. My wife is a professional singer. I spend my weekends as FOH (Front of House) sound technician at my local church. (We use the Soundcraft Series 5 3 channel board, and Media Matrix sound processors with a custom acoustical designed speaker system. In my off time, I produce albums, and have been told that I do an adequate job. I spend a lot of time in sound recording studios, and have designed a few systems for local churches.

I may not have designed the systems I use, but I think I have a pretty good ear. I do, however, understand how to calibrate a sound system for the environment.

That being said, I agree, if you spend thousands of dollars, you could end up with a superb sounding system, you could also end up with a lot of credit card bills. The question is, Why?

Lets say you just put $12,000.00 into you 9 year old Infiniti sound system. Just as soon as you get to your favorite part of a song, or the part of Top Gun, where the jets are buzzing the tower on the aircraft carrier, some idiot, with a Civic, and 2500 watts feeding 4 15" subs, will pull up next to you, playing some gangster wrap song, or worse, "Dreamweaver".

My suggestion is, spend your money on a nitrous kit. Save the thousands, for a new M45.

if you put 12000 dollars into a system....im sure it will outpower the punka$$ kid who has 4 15s from walmart.

These threads are enjoyable. I appreciate the numerous insights. However, since I am now a fan of Infiniti autoworks and look forward to saving some cash to acquire a new Infiniti I can break in... J30t (Daniel) what's your asking price for your old 6x9's? I'd be content to reestablish the stock sound especially since I was impressed with the fidelity I heard before it went bad.

Daniel, would you prefer an email address to send your price? Did the electronic specs of the speakers change between 93 & 95?

It is great, to have a place to go for advice, and get some great deals on parts. After all, there is nothing better than getting the best, for less.

Enjoy the new J30. It's a sweet ride. I first got hooked on Infiniti, riding in my friends new '93 J30t with the rear steering assist. I was a Maxima man, until then. It was 7 years later, before I could get one, though. Now I have 2, and am searching for #4, and #5 (M45 & G35 Coupe)

That's cool you're working on a collection. I hope to be there someday. I have a problem parting with my cars. I still have a slightly lifted '87 Wrangler I occasionally put on the road in the summers.

Ideally, I'd love to hang onto the J30 to give to my son. It's cool to see how much he enjoys the car...especially when he's taking in the revving engine and fishtails in wet, open parking lots. Don't tell mom!

I know I'm establishing some potentially bad driving habits, but I just read they finished mapping the human genome. I'm sure there going to report the discovery of a gene called six cylinder.

Well..i checked on ebay to see the going price. Some are going for as much as $40 without the amps. Well im not looking for that much so Id say $20+$7 shipping. It will be slightly more for shipping if you want priority. Those magnets way a ton!

So I'll be sending you $27 for the two speakers? I can mail you a money order tomorrow or does this site offer some quicker payment feature? Do you know if the speaker specs were the same for our cars?

I appreciate the offer.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm still going to have to disagree with your assessment of Bose on a number of points:

"A higher fidelity sound can actually come from a single cone than a complete set of three or four way speakers."

This is not true. A larger speaker better reproduces lower frequencies, and a small speaker more efficiently reproduces higher frequencies. This is simple physics and the way sound is reproduced. Given comparable materials and engineering, a multi-cone system will ALWAYS outperform a single cone system.

Regardless of the engineering of the amplifiers, a poor quality speaker will always sound poor. The most expensive amplifier, no matter how carefully tuned, will not make up for poor quality speakers.

Bose produces poor quality speakers. Rather than using modern materials, their speakers are made of paper. While they will sound decent when new, they will stiffen and lose their shape much faster than more sophisticated materials. They are utterly incapabable of producing accurate high frequencies, and significantly distort at moderate volumes in low frequencies.

That being said, I would not be likely to replace a factory Bose system until I had a reason to. It's too much hassle. Of course, most people are likely to replace their system at some point because of the notorious unreliability of Bose components.

I also agree with Jeff. There are a lot of better ways to spend the money than on a high dollar rolling sound system.

BTW, TV's have tint settings because ambient light in a room will affect the picture quality. Contrast, brightness, color level, and tint controls are there to allow you to adjust your picture to personal preference or (using a reference DVD and a blue filter) to studio reference levels. Try watching TV in a room with fluorescent lights on, then watch with an incandescent light on, then try it with all the lights off. The difference is noticeable. Every room has different ambient light and every TV requires some tweaking. The factory settings can't possibly be right for every environment.

Mine sounded good until I put in a new HU because the bose quit working and I wanted MP3 playback. The speakers seemed to distort more at higher volumes with the new headunit in. I then later replaced all the speakers because the the amp in the rear went out and I figured...$50 for a used amp off of ebay or....$450 for all new speakers and an amp. Plus...i added a tweeter up front since my 93 J had no tweeters. It sounds much much much better.

mikey....email me: [email protected] I believe the speaker specs should be the same for all years of the J. Id leave that up to an expert though.

I think we all clearly see that it's probably not the best use of funds to keep a stock system in tip top shape.

I confess more physics and engineering classes than lifetime experience when it comes to speaker design.

but maximabob is completely wrong on the tint thing. this isn't the correct forum for this, so I'll be brief.

NTSC tv's have tint and PAL don't. PAL is better system, mostly because it didn't have to be backward compatible to American BW. Use google and do a little bit research. You should find a humorus antedote in which the Nazi German goverment of the 30's almost forbid American broadcasters from televising the olympics in berlin because they decided NTSC was so inferior it would make Berlin look bad. The americans developed a system that virtualy elimanted the need for home users to adjust the tint and the germans relented.

I am looking for a new TV, and have just about decided to go with the Gateway 2000 42" plasma Display For $2,999.00, it seems to be a great deal. Any other ideas out there?

BTW, how hard would it be to change the format of this forum to Television?:D

No more TV talk -- unless it's about a cool new TV ad for the Z roadster. :)

mikey1313;

Soon, you will be able to add "Listening to loud music" to the bad habbits you are teaching your son.

.Quote »...especially when he's taking in the revving engine and fishtails in wet, open parking lots.[/quote]

I think it's better, if they learn bad habbits from their parents, rather than someone else.

I drifted the Q, the other day, coming home from church, behind my wife's I30. Itook a 90 degree off-camber corner at 60 MPH, and suprised an M5 driver, coming the other way. My wife didn't think it was as funny as I did.

Enjoy the new(er) speakers
