Went to the Pick N Pull in St Louis. While I was there, the rain fell HARD. I took refuge inside a Corolla with a foul odor that smelled like rotting meat/people/hookers. I sat there for quite a while waiting for the storm to pass. I was tempted to jump into an Infiniti J30 nearby but chose the Corolla's stench over being pelted with hail.
My donor. A 1992 Saab 900 convertible. 120k, naturally aspirated, automatic.
Bonus! Found on the ground. I might cut it out and put it on the wall or something.
This is after I ransacked the interior, taking the seats, all the switches, and the gauge cluster.
My wheelbarrow of goodies. These heated manual seats are MUCH lighter than the power ones in my convertible. Structurally, they're perfect. I need to order new leather upholstery for it on eBay.
Also in the wheelbarrow are eight switches for hazard, headlights, AC, recirc, wing mirrors, 12v lighter plug, side vents, a gauge cluster, and more. I also grabbed a chrome grille ($90 used) and brake accumulator ($100 used, $500 new ). All worth $550 on ebay, though I might keep most of it for spares. I offered it for free to the local guys.
Because of the thunderstorm, their card processing was down. I ended up having to drive into town (the north side is NOT pretty) and find an ATM. Some of the roads near the river like to flood during a storm, so the Saab went through some unusually deep (5-7") water. I crossed my fingers and hoped the electricals didn't let me down.
Almost every structure still standing is boarded up. I got a lot of stares driving a weird Euro car around an area full of old Buicks and Chevys with shaking trunks.Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" was playing pretty loud as I pulled up to the catfish/gas/pawn/liquor/video store, which prompted one urban-looking gentleman to look at me funny.
Came back with cash, total was $89.27. There's a play area for kids at the junkyard.
Dropped the top and shoved the new seats in the back, screws in the map pocket, and everything else in the front seat.
New vs old grille.
Installed. Just need to put the turbo badge on the new grille.
Rear ash tray missing.
Installed!
Unrelated... this is a pot my roommate destroyed by leaving the stove on, forgetting he was cooking, and letting all the water boil out. The bottom is warped. He moved the scalding hot pot to the sink and left a burned ring. He did this EXACT SAME THING last year, destroying another pot and leaving a mark on the laminate counter. Ugh.
Unrelated... yesterday I got trapped in the car when I pulled up surrounded by wasps. I got one to eventually crawl behind the mirror. I hit the mirror switch and crushed it back there -- I didn't see it come out so I assume its dead (or recovering slowly and plotting my demise). The wuss that I am, I was trapped in there for almost ten minutes. Eventually I jumped out of the car and ran like hell (which isn't that fast by normal standards).
AC works now after topping off with R12 (cost $250). Blows ice cold at 34F.
A good day.
