I don't like the idea of putting stuff on the top of my car so I though I would build a cargo carrier for the hitch at work.
After searching the net for a few hours I came up with this http://www.pickupspecialties.com/Tailga ... go_box.htm as my favorite option.
2 problems with this... Its not water tight and its to small, as in my cooler won't fit in it small lol.
Now I could build this at work and make it water tight but it would weigh twice as much. Which brings me to my next point, the max tongue weight is 150 lbs :lolling:
Has anybody come close or over this weight?

My next option is to buy an old (water tight) Greenlee, weld the hitch insert on it, powder coat it and put on some casters.
I found the perfect used Greenlee for $300 but its 180lbs empty
If indeed I am facing 150lbs max I think I am barking up the wrong tree here.

300winmag,

I would look at a simple hitch mounted cargo basket and some lightweight plastic totes. Yes, it's not as pretty but is far more flexible.

As for increase the tongue weight to 250lb, the issue isn't the fact the chassis can't handle it. The problem is to much rearward weight can unload the front tires and create handling issues. If you have loaded up the cargo area with gear as well, it will get even worse!

Ya, I am thinking I could put all the heavy stuff up front and throw the sleeping bags, chairs and what not in the container. Just doesn't seem right that a vehicle cant hold the weight of an adult male on the tongue.

EDIT:
Just talked to a guy who carries 200lbs worth of bikes sticking out 4' on his carrier and all he has is worse mileage. As long as I go with the Class III hitch with a 2" receiver it should be all good.

Last winter I was at 180 lbs of tongue weight towing a trailer every weekend.
This winter I was at around 220 lbs of tongue weight due to the weight distribution on my load changing. (newer sled with far more weight in the front, sled is already 12' long on a 9' deck, so it can't be moved back further) I've started to observe a noticeable sag in the rear. The sag is minimal when unhitched, but when the trailer is hooked up, it sags a lot. It wouldn't be able to take 2 people sitting in the back plus gear, plus the trailer without sagging to an uncomfortable level. (probably just uncomfortable for my nerves, but fine in actuality)

But, I picked up a Titan last week, so now my woes are over! :P

Still though, I wouldn't advise over 200 lbs on a regular basis. I bet 250 would be fine 5 times a year or less though.

Congrats on the titan!! I was looking at a sweet jacked Frontier but they wanted 10K more then it was worth :(
Thanks for the info, Gonna start out with lighter loads and work my way up just to be sure.
