TMS popped up a few weeks ago answering a valve train question someone had concerning the SR. He linked this tomei product. I took a look at it, and now I'm trying to do a bit of research on it. How do these replace the lash adjusters? I thought the lash adjusters to work properly, had to move. These solid pivots can't move. Also, would the stock camshaft be compatible with it? The valvetrain has always been a worry of mine and I'm looking at reworking the head within the next year or so anyways, so I might try to add these to my shopping list if I feel that they are a good investment.

Solid types require valvetrain componants off of an RNN14 head.

Things like: valves, camshafts, rocker arms, rocker guides, shaft retainers, valve springs, and shims.

Research in full before you post such answers. What you stated is required for the higher end "lash killer kit ". The tomei solid pivot system uses precision made pivots. All you have to do with the installation of these is to get the proper size shims to place the rocker at a certain clearance to the cams in it's closed position. What happens when this is installed, both sides of the rocker arms becomes solid and are not variable. In doing so, the only way to pop off a rocker now is due to valve float or a broken cam. The higher end kits from other manufacturers often known as "lash killer kit" are full kits to convert the head over to RNN14 style valve train. Tomei chose the simpler and less expensive path for those who do not want to source GTiR rocker arms etc.

So to cut it short:

Replace lifters with tomei solid pivots. Put the valve train back together and measure for shim clearances to purchase the correct size shims from the "Stealership".

thanks, GenX. I'll probably consider them when I get ready to overhaul the head.

You'll also need to get 'solid type' cams...they are on the Tomei website as well.

FYI, the purpose of the lash adjusters is to make for a quieter valvtrain that requires less maintenance. With the sold lash kit, you'll need to have them re-shimmed (I think every 30-40k).

how exactly do you measure for the shims?

you get a test shim with the kit, install it under each rocker arm and stick a feeler in there, when you get the right size note the size and location for each rocker arm.

I'm sorry I can't give the exact procedure (not an engine builder, hehe), but I know you'll need some flat blade feeler gauges. You measure w/ the feeler gauges and if the shims are out of spec, you replace them w/ the proper ones. You can only check certain shims at certain times (say, when cylinder 1 is at TDC, then other shims when cyl 2 is at TDC). Since there is no procedure in the FSM, I can only assume the exact procedure is included w/ the Tomei kit. The pulsar GTiR FSM should have the right procedure as well. You'll probably also need a micrometer to measure the sims (unless the tomei shim kits are labeled).
