I've done two of my own on a Frontier and an Xterra and have helped with several others.
There's so many variables to this, that it's impossible to give you the end all list.
What suspension configuration are you after? Leafs? Coils? Coilovers? How big a tire do you plan on running? Are you keeping the stock Tcase (no aftermarket gears are available for a 720 case)Gearing in the rear axle likely won't be low enough for big rubber and you'll need to match whatever you do in the rear with matching D44 gears in front. Your best bet there is swapping in a different rear axle too.
Building a D44 is pretty basic. Good candidates for a leaf sprung axle are 80-91 Grand Wag axles (not the XJ jeep). Early Bronco axles work too if you're doing a coil/radius arm setup. If you're keeping the stock Tcase, a passenger side diff axle could work too, as the front driveshaft output is centered on your truck. You could also swap in a divorc conversion Toyota transfer case and run passenger side diff axles. That opens you up to Scout axles, 74-79 jeep wag axles, Toyota axles, and others.
You need to be strong in fabrication. plan your swap well and acquire parts before you start if it's a job you ever want to finish.
Custom front driveshaft, fabricated shock mounts, fabricated spring hangers and shackle setups....all this is part of the game.
