i have a 91 nissan hardbody sohc . previously it has had a problem with randomly not wanting to start. you can smell the gas and it will crank for about 10+ mins before it will actually start. then recently it started running rough so i replaced the cap and rotor button. now it wont hardly start at all. a few times i have gotten it to run, but not very well. spark plugs are soaked in gas, but all are working. i replaced the spark plugs and that didnt help, still wont crank at all. there is a ticking noise coming from the head and has gotten progressively worse, now its very noticable (dont know if thats associated with this problem). i checked the timing when i actually got it to run, seemed like it was way off. fully advanced but before the marks on the crank pulley. i cant get it to run long enough to accurately figure out exactly where the timing is at though. could this be a timing issue or what?

are you certian yo have good spark? try removing the fuel pump fuse and see if it trys to start. when it seems like is going to start put the fuse back in. you may have a fuel issue but i would recheck the spark system (coil, distributor etc.)

thats what i would do to get the car running sometimes. unplug all the injectors and it would actually run long enough for me to walk around and plug them back in. so much damn fuel. it sure seems like good enough spark though, but ill check it again. any suggestions other than that?

You said it wouldn't start after you replaced the cap and dist. button? are all the plug wires attached to the proper points on the cap? did you put the new cap/button on the same way the old ones came off? (not sure if thats even possible to do) There seems to be other issues but the non-start sounds like a timing problem especially since it started after you replaced timing related parts.

well its had this problem before but it would always eventually start up. now it has gotten to the point where it will almost never start. yesterday i went out and it cranked right up. i did that a few times and then tried it one more time and it wouldnt crank up again. so it ran yesterday a few times for about 10 minutes i guess. it didnt run very well, decent at most. could it be the coolant temperature sensor? my brothers car had that problem but it always just ran like normal after he finally got it to start. could it just be so much gas its immediately fouling the plugs? ive already gotten the coolant temp and a new fpr. ill try those and report back, thanks for the help man.

Coolant temp sensors do cause this incident often. When replacing the sensor check the connector pins. They usually turn green or the pin tensions are loose.

sike, took it for a drive today. first gear wide open it barely moves and its idling like **** again. it cranks up every time now, takes a while after it warms up though. could it be leaking injectors? fpr? timing? any ideas?

see if injectors are loose (able to spin) direction of spray is important (by the way spin = bad but hey i can adjust idle on my car with it lol)
