So I had my thermostat changed, and fluid flushed. I was driving today for about 45 minutes straight at 120kmph, and when I got home I noticed my temp gauge was almost at max, I had my heat on but it was on re-circulate. I immediately turned the car back on, and let it run for a good 10 minutes, with the heat blasted. The temp immediately dropped and went back to normal. I could hear the coolant bubbling and what not, thats when I noticed the temp. It was going crazy in the reservoir!!

Why is my car doing this? I noticed last weekend when I was at a stop on a hill that the heat was climbing a little, and I turned the heat on and it solved the problem.

My mechanical fan is working, and there is no rad fluid leaking. I will check the level tomorrow.

Should I bring it back to the shop and have them look at it? What gives?

The upper rad hose (intake side of the engine) had no pressure, it was hot as hell, but I could squeeze it.

Do I have an air bubble?? I know the shop used a machine to drain and refill the coolant, and let it run for a bit, and there were no bubbles. Is it possible there is an air pocket?

Maybe try bleeding or burping the system. I am not sure where the bleeder screw is for an sohc but on the dohc its right where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine. It should have a little sticker that says something like "caution, do not open when engine is hot." Just look in the FSM and try to bleed the engine of any air. Unscrew the bleeder screw, take off radiator cap, turn on automobile and put your heater on max. Run until no little bubbles or foam looking stuff comes out of the bleeder hole. I think it helps if you also squeeze your upper radiator hose a couple of times.

Good luck.

I have no idea. I have never had a water pump go out on me. Sorry bro. Try to find the symptoms of a failing water pump on this site or anywhere online. If you can't find anything to point the finger at I would try to find help at a shop or a friend. I wouldn't recommend driving the car too much either until you know whats wrong with it. Sorry for the lame help.

I was on my blackberryy,,,I am searching now. Its super noisy now!!!

I am probably just going to buy a ka24e for $300 it has 120km on it, was previously an auto. Just have to pull that auto pilot bushing out and pop my 5spd on. I know my chains are stretching beyond belief on my motor. It has 260K!!! No rebuild.

I have to wait until next weekend, keep your fingers crossed for me guys!!

Hopefully my 240sx can take two 1 hour drives 8 more times..so I can get to and from work!!!

hey man overheating = no good. my water pump on my SR gave out and i would get rapid temperature changes. Changed it out and ran perfect. i know you got and sohc but similar symptoms. When i had the sohc ka i actually got the same problem. it wasn't the pump though. first it was a hose beneath the intake manifold that was leaking. once i fixed that i noticed that the block was leaking water at the preassure release points. you might want to check for those. These old engines want to break down at any sign of tension.

good luck man. you can find a water pump at a junk yard somewere and it's not expensive. it at least beats 300 for another ka. instead save ur money and get the SR problem solved haha. goood luck man. peace.

Sounds like you have air in the system.

Jack up the frount of the car and open the bleder screw (located near the temp sensors at the frount of the intake) and verify that no air comes out. If air comes out add water to radiator until water comes out. Replace bleader screw.Top off the radiator and you should be good to go.

What condition is your Radiator cap in? If it is old and not sealing well that can cause overheating also. Usualy cheap enough to just replace on general pricipals.
