Hey,

I'm new to the forums here and Im looking for some help. I have a 1990 One-via, and I recently installed a header and exhaust. Works well except for one problem, the carpet is burning up where the header and cat bolt up. Let me start from the beginning, the car was running terrible because of a leaking exhaust manifold gasket and it had a stuttering problem off the line. (not sure if related or not)I went and bought a header since the gasket needed to be replaced n e way, and had the exhaust done: maganflow hi-flow cat, oem skyline resonator, 2.25" piping and dual tip muffler. When i first got it back after the first hour/two the headers had already turned blue, black, & brown. Mechanic said engine was running too rich, which in turn burned up the exhaust gaskets for the cat. (replaced those) And carpet was hot on drivers side.Had the timing adjusted, and it ran better. But stuttering problem was still there. ECU scan came up with Faulty EGR code. Tested it and egr doesnt work properly. Want to block it off altogether, but left that alone. Mechanic said ot shouldnt be a problem.Took it to a Nissan specialist, and we decided to start by changing old 02 sensor. Then scraped corrosion off of engine temp sensor and injector terminals. Then realized that the last spark plug wire next to firewall had burned a hole and was jumping spark to the header. (replaced that)It has been running fine but still a little hesitation off the line, and carpet is still very hot/burning (no flames) after driving for a little while.

Since then upgraded from cone filter and stock intake to short ram intake w/ cone filter. Changed the oil and put some injector cleaner in. Desparately need help.

to ease the heat get some exhuast wrap and handle that. I would also suggest checking your tps voltage(s) idle and wot. I know for the 90 idle is .5 volts and that wot should be 4.xx . good luck and welcome.

Thanx but two questions: Is the TPS the Throttle Position Sensor? And what is wot?

Please don't call your car a one-via. It is a 1990 240sx coupe. People on the internet look for excuses to flame others, and when someone calls their 240 a silvia or one-via or 180sx, it makes them look silly and incites flaming.

Just giving you a heads up on that. Hope you resolve your Exhaust temperature issue.

Thanx for the heads up. One more thing about the exhaust, I checked my exhaust gaskets yesterday from the cat to the header, and they are leaking once again. I dont know how to or have the equipment to check the voltage so i am gonna have to go the shop. N e other possibilities like an engine temp sensor?

Thanx for the thought, but the heat is coming directly from the floor pan, and the Nauseous smell of burning carpet & vinyl pretty much seals it. More input is welcome...

how many hangers did they use to hang your exhaust? get some metal gaskets for the cat to header. It realy sounds like maybe the engine's vibrations are letting the gasket get blown out

Is the CAT installed with the heat shield on top; if not, that's where 90% of the heat is coming from.

Heat wrapping will cause the exhaust piping to rust out sooner than expected because it traps condensed moisture after motor is shut off; like over-night.

yep but he cant stand the heat and he wants to stay in the kitchen. I think hed be willing to replace the section once every year rather than almost get burnt daily.

Im not sure how many hangars were used I'll have to check...but I think the heat from the rich exhaust is what's blowing the gaskets.

I hope they would have put the heat shield on top, I'll have to double check that. I was thinking of that heat wrap, but I heard about the headers cracking so I didnt. Especially b/c the header is a one piece 4-1 header I would have to replace the whole header.
