I've got an 89 240 and I'm doing some work on the motor, replacing the timing chain guides..

Went to the dealer and apparently (yes I've searched a bit) there are two different slack guides. The parts guy informed me if I have a 240 produced before 3/1989 then it uses this one, if after 3/89 that one..

Does it really matter which one? The tension guide was an upgraded part, so I got that.. but the slack guide... I don't really know which one I need so I got the newer one which looked similar to the one I took off the motor.

I can't imagine why it wouldn't work... if anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it! Thanks

they are different part numbers, but I'm not exactly sure what's different. One thing I'm pretty sure of though, is a service bulletin that went out for the early 89 cars. So I'm assuming there was some revision done for the later model sohcs to correct that.

it was more of a national recall to have the timing parts replaced d/t the old plastic ones weren't cutting it... now had metal-backed plastic guides as the revisions.

this is a 1st to have 2 diff part #s for that particular set on the KA24E... Y don't u just tell the parts guy to pull both of them off the shelf & show them to u. you can also find your manufacturer code on the door jamb plate... mine's 9/88

that way, we can all learn of the differences... aftermarket didn't have such thing & I'm currently ok w/ the set i got...

I probably confused some of you guys.

The tension guide (left side) is the one with two part numbers.

The straight guide (right side) apparently was changed as well.. but you can't order the older one. (from what I was told).

Anyways, I ended up getting the right parts. If anyone has questions feel free to post and I can get pics if needed.
