Apparently, Mobil (Champion Labs, actually) has figured out how to capture black holes out in space and put one inside each of their oil filters...

I fill the filter to the top with fresh oil, set it aside for a few minutes, pick it up again, and all the oil is gone! I top it off again, and a few minutes later, it's half a quart* low!

(*exaggeration)

Not sure what kind of alien technology they're using in their filter media, but it makes ya wonder: If it takes that much oil to fill the filter, how many seconds would the 4.1/4.5 be running without adequate oil pressure immediately after you install a dry filter?

been doing this for 25+years.

vh are not ideal for filling the filter, but we can still get 1/2 full.

old dodge slant6 was the worst.....upsidedown filter.

The handy-dandy built-in oil catcher/drain tube is a NICE feature - I don't mind slopping a little bit of fresh oil into the catch pan, if it allows me to squeeze a few extra ounces into the filter...

Haven't tried this, but always wondered if you could completely fill a filter, and then pre-chill it to thicken the oil enough to keep it from running out while you installed it - maybe put it in a freezer overnight, or dry ice?

Obsessive? Yep...

Worthwhile? Probably not...

if you have recently run engine to warm up oil before draining{as you should} then there should be plenty of an oil film on moving engine internals to lubricate for the few seconds it takes for oil to run through the new filter and on to its designed path.

I don't pre-fill, but I do pull the injector fuse and turn the engine over a few seconds before the first start after an oil change. It eliminates that litle bit of valve clatter and pressure build-up before everything gets lubricated again...

Oil starvation for any length of time isn't a good thing - especially when it can be easily avoided.

If pre-filling adds a few hundred miles of life to the engine, it'll be worth it for me.

I've always done the pre-filling of the filter. Whenever someone sees me pouring oil in the filter they have to ask why... I guess not everyone gets it!
