I keep seeing more and more anti-drift signatures and anti-drift posts. whats the deal?

I do auto-x, late night backroad driving, and both street drift and sanctioned drift events. (at least I dont lie lol)

I'm also hoping to attend my first true PCA driving event. So you guys know where I am coming from.

Why get mad at drifting? It is just another form to have fun in your car. why hate?

p.s. my mind may change after F&F3 when kids are drifting theyre mom's camry's. I see it popping up everywhere lately. n00bs drifting is annoying, yes, but why hate on that which was pure because of n00bs?

It's not the drifting that is the problem, it's the people. Not all of them of course, but posers far outnumber the real enthusiasts in this catagory of autosports.

Yeah, bossie nailed it.Drifting is a sport that's become a fad. And being a fad, it attracts tons of posers and bandwagon jumpers.

Not really sure what the deal is, but it may have something to do with the poeple that do it in public streets. Id' hate to be comeing around the corner and see a car sliding right at me, and have to swerv out of the way only to hit a kid waliking down the sidewalk. All the while the little punk kid in the " drift machine" thinks he just completed a formula D event. sorry for the rant, just kinda puts it into a new perspective huh.

Personally, I just don't like it. I don't know any people who do a lot of drifting...so, I can't say I don't like the people.

To me an autosport shouldn't require judges ala figure skating. There is something that is generally satisfying about the way most automotive sports compete... in that the results are a factual result based on a known scale (time).

Similar to gymnastics, figure skating, diving, etc, one could argue that the judging is no less factual than the results provided by timing a race. But, to the observer, there is a difference in that their understanding of judging criteria is not complete enough to make the nuance differences in performance truely observable.

I understand the general intent and criteria diving meets are judged on...but, I don't spend all day every day living the dive ratings the way judges do. So, to me, its nearly impossible to differentiate between a good dive, a really good dive, a great dive, and an impossibly good dive.

At the end of any competition of this type I am always left questioning whether the results truely rewarded the best participant or the participant who was lucky enough to have their mistakes go unnoticed. And, this is assuming that the judging is fair and competent. I question even well judged and fair results. If you include the inherent and unavoidable facets of human bias, the results become all the more questionable.

I can appreciate the skills required to be a competent drifter. But, to me it just isn't relevant as a motorsport. And, done as a form of amusement I put it on the same level as doing a burnout. Its brainless fun, but hardly warrants sanctioning bodies, judges, and competitions.

The beauty of the drift is that it allows the driver to get from point A to point C while going through the inconvenience of point B quickly. When viewed within the context of Rally racing I see drifting as a necessary skill to be the fastest driver. However, as a stand alone I don't understand it. To me, this seems like taking a drag racers and elminating the race...just judging them on the most spectacular burnout.

Anyway... just my 2 cents.

As it's been said; it's the people mostly. Not that drifting isn't dumb and boring most of the time, but my real beef is with the huge bandwagon following it has of these newbie johnny comelately mofo's thinking they're the sh*t. Normally I can ignore idiots but when I start getting associated with them based on 240 ownership, I get annoyed. There seems to be a sentiment that 240's are meant to only drift, and really all they're good for; atleast among the ignorant/outsiders. I typically don't associate with many 240 people because of that, but there's always exceptions to the rule (cool drift bandwagoneers).

Yep, drift kiddies are annoying.

As for the sport itself, I don't respect it any less than any other motorsport. Why the form of judging may be less absolute and perfect than that used in pure racing, it doesn't dilute my respect for the skills involved. I think that a good drifter is just as worthy of respect as a good road racer or a good rally driver.

And seriously.... I mean distaste for the bandwagon or not....drifting is fun. I'm not so big on doing it in actual competitions just because I feel no need to compete against anyone in it, but it's just a fun thing to do with your car. Especially gymkhana, we need more gymkhana in the US, it's just way too much fun.

I agree with the whole sanctioned events and judging thing. I think it's lame to judge them.

I know a lot of you guys are into the sport and competition side of a lot of things. I guess I am not on the same plane as you guys. I just race for fun. I drift for fun. I play kingdom hearts, eat sushi, and do naughty things with my girlfriend for fun. Do I need a judge? hell no. If it does come to competition, it kind of kills it (except in actualy racing competition... TIME ATTACK YO!)

as for the drift kiddies... omfg. everywhere I go I have STUPID FREAKEN PEOPLE come up to me like I am god on earth asking if I drift and to take them for a ride and drift and bla bla bla SHUT UP N00B!!!!!!!

I personally don't have a problem with the way it is judged (most of the time) because usually I make the exact same call in my head that the judges make.

I think it's offensive that you would put a drift on the same level as a burnout... burnouts require almost NO driver skill where drifting requires an incredible amount... you can't compair the two let alone put them on the same level.

Not all drifting takes alot of skill. Granted at the high levels where they run almost drag car-esque alignments and can actually induce and control understeer aswell as oversteer and link stuff together fluidly; THAT'S incredible skill.

But the typical weekend warrior with his clickity clacking 2-way that just does the typical slight feint, clutch kick, then gas modulation for each turn before regaining traction and repeating...*I* can do that, and I'm not even any good.

I knew about, and liked drifting (couldn't partake. No license, or car) before most people even knew what it was. Somewhere around 6 years ago. I find that the release of Need For Speed Underground caused ALOT of people to jump on the drifting bandwagon. I actually had one guy come up to me and ask me "Do you drift?" "On occasion." "Sweet, what's the best score you've got on Need For Speed?" I almost smacked him.

i used to be just like you.

"bah drifting is gay, its not racing and its judged like figure skating"

till 2 things happened. 1) i rode with a very good friend who is abso****inglutley amazing. probably one of the best amatuers in the US, and i saw how hard it is and what it requires. and 2) i tried it.

the "scene" that follows drifting is RETARDED. the posers are annoying and stupid, i cant stand them. i honestly cant stand alot of the spectators too. leave me the **** alone, dont touch my car, dont look at my engine, stay away from my tools. no you cant have a ride and im not telling you what modifications i have.

the REAL drivers are some of the coolest people ive ever met. its kinda funny, the "real" drifters hate the drifting scene just as much as the people who dont drift hate it.

there is also a big difference between professional drifting and just doing it. the "judged" bull**** is just that, bull****. i drift because its fun. i dont want to go pro, i dont ever plan to be sponsored. i have a blast doing it. theres no adrenaline rush like taking a corner at 80mph sideways at the absolute edge of control.

road racing will always be a huge love of my life, i HPDE just as much as i drift but lets be realistic here, for a spectator drifting is a hell of alot more exciting.

its not that i think its ghey or anything, and yes i respect the skill level, i just dont like it...nothing says i have to

ive got about 10 world class road courses within a few hours of me, very few have drifting events, so i really never got into it because of all the road racing i can see and participate in around me

ill probably try it eventually, but im not just into road racing for a hobby either, so thats still where as much of my time as possible will be spent

ok now thats one thing to hate the people who get all wierd about drifting in general, but why would you get mad if someone wants to see your work that you have done to your engine. The phrase "pop the hood" has been around for a while, and just because its a 240 doesnt mean they wanna see what kind of "drift mods" you have. i sometimes see a tricked car and talk to the owner, so i can see how well they have their car set up in general. As an enthusiast, i like seeing a car thats been modified, plus i like to learn. i just dont understand why some people get mad when asked to see their work.

if you come at me in an adult manner and ask to see my car i have NO problems showing it off, im very proud of my car and my work.

but if you look like a wannabe thug with a flat billed hat on sideways and some "ice" around your neck then come up to me saying "**** y0 that car is madd tiite dogg you thinkz i could take a luk at your engin?"

im gonna tell you to get the **** away from me before i taze you.

unforutionatley the majority of people at drifting events look like that. and talk like that.

I guess you have never been to a drift event then... it get's anoying when for the 20th time some guy who does not even know how an engine works starts asking you questions about your "modz"

"is it Turbo?"

I'm like WTF does it look like a have a Turbo straped to my STOCK manifold?

Drifting is alright, but the whole mantra and "lifestyle" that some people get caught up in is hilariously retarded.

The sheer amounts of hypocracy that surrounds drifting also makes for a laugh. Just look around on any drifting forum, most of the talk is about trying to fit monster wheels and a body kit on their car, and then go and proclaim their "hardcoreness" by removing the backseats for weight reduction.

Drifting has also made every 18 yr. old with a 240 a suspension expert

Drifting is fun, just like many other motorsports.

I fear there is a lot of speculation going on in this thread too regarding drifters. I've met my fair share of posers in the whole drifting/240sx scene.. but the number of real, down-to-earth drifters and fans have always been the vast majority. My reasoning is because posers don't last. They don't have fun because the majority will shun them, and eventually they fade out. That has not been my experience. Some of you make it seem like posers are taking over. Again, this has not been my experience- in houston at least. Maybe it's possible that we have different definitions of what makes a poser...?

Also, I'm not pointing anyone out, but don't judge people based on what you perceive on a message board.

i vouch for Allen's word, I've been attending many drift events in Houston area in the past year and all i can say is that the sport is growing a lot within a past year with positive feed back/turn out. I befriended w/ many enthusiast in the area and like allen said, they're down to earth and are fun to be around.

complaining about the ppl who jump on the bandwagon is retarded. anything and everything thats popular will have its share of posers. I recently got my 240 and I love it. 1st time owning a rwd and im never going back to ff. have I tried drifting? not really unless you consider siding for 2 seconds then yes. drifting is not for everyone. i personally think it takes a lot of skill to master and respect those who do it
