This is not directed towards anyone in particular, but as a cyclist and an Altima owner, I can see both sides of this argument. I don't like it myself when a cyclist is acting STUPID and runs lights/signs, cuts off cars, etc...it gives ALL cyclists a bad name.
Cyclists DO have to obey the same traffic laws as motor vehicles, but at the same time, they DO have the right of way, just like a pedestrian. Check your local laws, but in Mississippi and Missouri, it is against the law for a cyclist to ride AGAINST traffic and also to be on a sidewalk. As for bike lanes, have any of you ever looked at one? The trash on the road is swept into the bike lanes along with the glass and everything else that will shred a bike tire and at $60 a pop (no pun intended), I'm not riding in that crap either.
I have ridden approx. 3,000-5,000 miles a year for the last 25 years, and I've seen almost everything that can happen on the road. I have been hit by those "BIG TOW MIRRORS" before and now I carry an equilizer that can reach out and "touch" someone from quite some distance for that very reason. And NO, I was not riding in the middle of the road, I was on a paved shoulder 6 ft wide, and AT LEAST 4 ft from the white line. The guy was pulling a boat, crossed over onto the shoulder and hit me. Why? HE WAS ON THE PHONE. The reservoir patrol who saw the incident take place, wrote him for hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident and I don't know what else. Then he explained to the truck driver that if he had killed me, he would be spending a little time with some guys who would really "like" him.
Until you've been smacked in the head by some @$$clown that is going another 50 ft down the road and turns in front of you while you're doing almost 30mph on a bike you can't possibly know what its like. Worst case: YOU KILL THE CYCLIST.... Best case: They don't crash and don't get your tag number and report you for hit and run. Do you pass cars going 30 mph and turn in front of them???
I have had guns pulled on me, tobacco wads thrown at me, beer cans (full ones) thrown at me and been told I have no right to be on the road and I'm standing there looking at a bike route sign! Do these same people do that to cars?
I get behind people talking on a cell phone while driving everyday in my car that aren't going as fast as I can ride, does that give me the right to run them off the road?? The 10 mile trip to work every morning takes me 22 minutes to drive and all but 2 miles of that is on a 65mph highway. I can ride 10 miles on a bike in 25 and some change. If everyone is in such a hurry, why does it only take 3 minutes less to DRIVE the same route?
I truly feel for the guy who's car got messed up because some IDIOTS pulled out in front of you and I think the guys who got hit GOT WHAT THEY DESERVED. Maybe they will look before they pull out in front of someone the next time.
At the same time, unless you've spent some time on the road and had people grab you physically and try to push you off the bike, had a gun pointed in your face, and been hit by one of those mirrors, you can't POSSIBLY know what you're talking about.
Sorry to get on my soapbox, but it seems the concensus here is anti-cyclist, and most of the people bashing sound like they've never been on a bike in any kind of traffic. We all need to be a little more tolerant of others, BOTH cyclists and cars alike, where are we all going that someone's LIFE ISN'T AS IMPORTANT?
Education on both sides is what we need, drivers of cars to pay attention to what they are doing instead of talking on the phone and cyclists to pay attention to what they are doing and not think they own the world. If I have offended anyone by this rant, it's not intended, but I would like to show the other side of this and get people to think about what they are doing.
