Well...First, My throw out bearing was installed backwards! So ive been driving clutchless for about a week. Then today, I got all that fixed and was happy as HECK!THEN, getting off the freeway, my car died, and i look, my timing chain is sticking out my valve cover...I get the car towed home then then i pull the VC, and the Intake Cam Snapped! How the heck does that happen????I previously removed the Guid peice that hovers over the chain becuase when i pulled my VC before it was broken.

Not that it matters but I think this a Chicken or the Egg thing.

Did the Cam Fail Taking out the Chain (my vote) ORDid the Chain fail taking out the Cam?

If the rest of the engine is ok (not likley) then all you need is a new head and Timing Chain etc (guides and stuff). My guess is MAJOR overhaul or replacement of complete engine.

Why did the cam fail? Any number of things.

Sucks don't it. (he says as he is re-building his own engine after blowing a 3x5 hole it the old block)

If it makes you feel any better, the engine I spent a year on only ran for an hour before the pin at the end of the cam sheered off and the cam moved backwards about a quarter inch. It destroyed the majority of my valves, left indentions in 4 of my 6 pistons, damaged an extremely rare cylinder head and pretty much ruined the whole motor. Was it the fact that it was a cheepo cam(came with the motor), incorrect torque due to my 30 year old torque wrench causing the cam gear bolt to back out and force the cam back, or too much stress on the cam in the guides due to a lack of oil? I can promise you I still have no idea. But I can also promise you I'll double and tripple check all torque settings, and oil passageways, and never use a cheepo cam again for the rest of my life.

I am really sorry to hear about what happened to your cam and chain, that really sucks, I wouldnt wish it on anyone. But as some of us old Z guys say, "When it breaks, it's an excuse to make it better"

When you remove the snapped cam, check all your guides and see if there is excessive heat marks, if the cam snapped in the mid motor area my guess is that a guide got hot and made the cam stick, the motor tried to make it keep going, and there goes the chain. That's my guess for now, but if you have any pictures, or can take some, that would deffinately help in figuring it out.

Again, sorry to hear that happend to you

Since your saying intake, Im assuming you have a DE. I've seen a few threads with peoples intake snapped. Is this a common thing swith DE's?

I got my new timing chain, I got a head, and I just ordered my Headgasket kit.The head i got the guy said it was from an s14.I could have SWORN that all Dohc heads were the same for twofourties....But when I look, people advertise their Valve covers and valve cover gaskets for either an s13 or an s14.Whats the deal.. arent they the same head?Wont it fit on my Dohc block? I mean.. Do i have to find a s14 valve cover?Sorry if im confusing you guys, im really confused myself.

So i did a little more searching..And The heads are a little different and the only real difference is the cam duration. I guess i should be fine. But I just need to find a valve cover cuz an s13 one wont work lolCan I switch the exhaust cam to the s14 head from my s13 dohc head with out any issues? I know that it fits and all, but can I just plugnplay?

Finally had time to take the head off. The pistons look Great! Thank God! You can see where the valves hit the pistons, but nothing major at all. I was just doing some reading on the valve swap, and it seems to help s14's better then out s13s so i think im gonna hold off that for now. Hopefully i get this new head bolted up today!Quick question. When my cam gear broke, i couldnt mark anything when I pulled it all off. Do i just put the cylinder one in TopDeadCenter and put the timing chain on the cam gears like this (stock original one #1) And it should run the way it should?http://jimwolftechnology.com/w...S.PDF

Thanks!

You have to make sure the tensioner is all the way depressed, so its not taking any of the slack you need to install the sprocket. I used a screw driver.. lol

I always put on the exhaust side first, then the intake. Seemed to go smoother that way. When your putting on the intake cam, you need to have a wrench to turn the camshaft just slightly so the aligning pin lines up with the sprocket.

Uhg, you hope you got the cams in right?

Damn dude.. Make sure you can spin your crank without it hitting the valves(stoping the crank when turning it by hand) before you start it.

Also forgot to add.The pipe that connects from the back of the header then goes to the intake manifold, i stripped one of the bolts on the itnake manifold part, and theres a gap, will that cause a vaccum leak or anything bad?

that pipe is the EGR pipe, and it is how exhaust finds its way back into your intake to be reburned for emmissions. This could cause you to fail emissions depending on how sharp the guy who tests it is. also your computer might throw codes, because it is indeed a leak, and exhaust leak. It all just depends on how much of a gap is.

Update.I pulled my head, and valves did look ok...I cant figure out why it was running ****ty. Probably cuz of cam timing i suppose. It would idle super rough and just shut off about ten seconds. or it will rev really high when started, then just shut off. this happen to anyone?
