If it makes you feel any better, the engine I spent a year on only ran for an hour before the pin at the end of the cam sheered off and the cam moved backwards about a quarter inch. It destroyed the majority of my valves, left indentions in 4 of my 6 pistons, damaged an extremely rare cylinder head and pretty much ruined the whole motor. Was it the fact that it was a cheepo cam(came with the motor), incorrect torque due to my 30 year old torque wrench causing the cam gear bolt to back out and force the cam back, or too much stress on the cam in the guides due to a lack of oil? I can promise you I still have no idea. But I can also promise you I'll double and tripple check all torque settings, and oil passageways, and never use a cheepo cam again for the rest of my life.
I am really sorry to hear about what happened to your cam and chain, that really sucks, I wouldnt wish it on anyone. But as some of us old Z guys say, "When it breaks, it's an excuse to make it better"
When you remove the snapped cam, check all your guides and see if there is excessive heat marks, if the cam snapped in the mid motor area my guess is that a guide got hot and made the cam stick, the motor tried to make it keep going, and there goes the chain. That's my guess for now, but if you have any pictures, or can take some, that would deffinately help in figuring it out.
Again, sorry to hear that happend to you
