My engine light was on and apparently I need a new crankshaft. $2000 right there. They have to take out the engine and whatnot. My parents were thinking of trading in the QX4 for something newer with less miles (I cant part with it) but we decided against that because you can't really buy anything in such good condition or thats going to be as reliable. Nissan says it should last another 100,000 miles. What should I do? I need a car for college.

I say get a Honda Pilot and slap a carbon fibre sticker that covers the entire hood.

How long have you had the QX4 for?

If you've had it for a decent number of years, have done all the proper maintenance, and know that is has run good since you've had it... I'd keep it. Oddball $2000 repairs suck, but when you go to bed at night, you can sleep soundly knowing that in all likeliness it'll last another 5 years, easy.

If, on the other hand, you go with a newer used vehicle, you're pretty much walking in blind. The previous owner(s) might have done all the fluid and filter changes, or maybe not. It's rare these days -- at least where I am -- to get a used vehicle with all the maintenance records. And with OBDII tools being as cheap as they are, it's easy as pie to erase any engine codes just long enough for you to take a test drive before they come back on. It's a guessing game. I hate guessing games.

As long as there's nothing else wrong with it that you know of, I'd keep it. Especially if you're a student. No big need to invest thousands of dollars in a slightly newer, flashier vehicle that might disintegrate in six months.

correct me if im wrong but i was one time browsing thru that one auto-part or w.e website its called where you can get engines and trannies. and you could get a rwd vq3.5 for like 2k with 65-70k miles, might as well go with a less mileage engine

we've been going to this nissan service center for years. My dad is paying for it - he still owns the car - so its his choice on what he wants to do. The car should last another 100K miles. It is in pristine condition. People ask if its a 2008.

What the SES code?

How many miles on your truck? It sounds like it only has 100,000. If it needs a new crank at 100K, something went wrong (cheap oil, didn't change the oil, low oil level, something like that) and there's probably other damage.

And what's the symptom that made you take it in?

engine light was on. Oil has been changed every 5K miles and before major road trips (drove 6 hours to and from jersey shore last weekend). 124K miles

You need to get a second opinion and realize that your car has obviously had some issues in the past. The fact that you didn't know the rear emblem was in the wrong place tells me that.

That is an uncommon problem for the amount of miles you have, something was causing the issue.

Looking back on the statement its the crankshaft sprocket and one of the intake valve seals.

I recently went through the same thing with my pickup. It had 87k miles on it and one of the bearings on the crank shaft disintegrated leaving me with the option of getting something else or rebuilding the engine. In the end, I went with a new engine. It cost me $6,000, but now I have a truck with a brand new engine and tons of accessories. The only other way to get a new engine and all of the accessories was to spend $35,000, so I feel pretty good about my choice.

nala,

i think you are getting ripped off! Dude, go rent a scanner at autozone for free, or borrow one from a friend, and pull the code which is causing the check engine light.

Then post up the code here. We will help you out.

Most often, check engine light in a QX4, its just a matter of resetting the light and forgetting about it.

How did the QX4 drive? Did the engine run funny? Make noise? No power?

car runs fine. engine light is off.

and yes, if I were at another nissan service center I would check the diagnostics again but I trust these people. They have been very good to me, and I have been going there 6 years.

Because it's what he does, over and over and over again. He loves to ask for opinions and disregard them. Regardless of what anyone says he continues to make poor decisions. I blame it on his parents spoiling him and forsee a lifetime of fail.
