Can the Left really keep calling the GOP the "Party of No", when they're pulling shenanigans like this? Are these four pinheads advocating stifling the free transfer of information?

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/201 ... 3_ST_N.htm

So, it's ok to invade my privacy with a speed camera, and potentially violate my 4th Amendment rights, but it's not ok for me to know where they're going to be?

It's ok to detain me en route to my destination without probable cause, on the off-chance that I *might* be impaired, but it's NOT ok for me to use technology to avoid those locations?

Since when do they get off telling a private corporation what they can and can't market?

Yes, I know that checkpoints have been found to be "constitutional". As such, there shouldn't be a problem with having an app that identifies their location.

Thoughts?

If you don't drink and drive and don't speed and it saves just one life its worth it.

I guess okies or people that live in the boonies might not agree. :chuckle:

Sounds like: "If you've got nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about."

I like your lack of backbone, Howie. Makes it easy to tell which team you play for.

I love that argument. I've got nothing to hide, but that doesn't change the fact that I'd like to keep my privacy. I'm with you on this one, Greg. You'll never see me consent to a search or anything like that, so I'm all for finding ways to avoid these situations. I don't drive drunk, but I certainly don't want to have to deal with the time wasted at a checkpoint. I'll avoid that area if at all possible. I don't like the assumption that me being on the road means I'm impaired (which is essentially what these checkpoints are claiming).

That's not the correct way to look at it. You need to consider that society places demands on citizens, and sometimes, those demands appear to step on our "rights." I don't really think so. You drive a car on a highway paid for and maintained with public funds. The public, through whatever process speeds limits are determined, have decided that you should not exceed a certain speed on a particular road. You're a guest on their road. Cameras are a way to enforce those rules. I don't particularly like the idea, but I'm not going to deny its value as it's for my safety as well as the others who use that road. You may be a responsible driver, but I've seen teenagers driving Civics and I need not say more.

I'd back your argument here if, for instance, they tried to mount cameras on our bedposts or shower heads. But, it's the public's street and my using it is at their pleasure, not mine.

I suspect (hope?) that if someone is drunk enough to be driving-impaired, they may be drunk enough (perhaps) to not be able to use the app properly in the first place.

I can argue either side on this one. But just for the sake of discussion, its possible such apps may "enable" people to take their chances driving impaired? And Z, you don't have to be s*** to be legally drunk. People are generally still mostly coherent at legal limits. They are just slower to react to inputs and lose some level of coordination.

As for trying to stop the apps, I think a better way would be to purposefully flood the app with false locations regularly. Or maybe it would just be the fun way...

Or, perhaps just make sure that people who get caught can't drive again as easy as they seem to. You practically have to kill a whole school bus stop to get the book thrown at you.

I can tell you that the police here in NJ set up unannounced road blocks on Friday and Saturday nights stopping and checking every vehicle for not only DWI, but insurance, license, registration, proper inspection sticker, oversize tires, illegal tinting, and outrageous sound systems.
At least our high taxes are getting the dirt bags off the road
That is one of the reasons why New Jersey is such a great place to live. :chuckle:

I'd agree with that, except these (following) words you used seem to lead the reader to a different conclusion.

That sure looks like you're against it, unless of course, your purpose is to mislead with sarcastic commentary. Or perhaps, you've got your Twitter account feeding your NICO account. Not that that's a bad thing, I enjoy a good rant as much as the next guy, and I keep forgetting rants are only responded to with a :bowrofl: , never a :gotme

I've still got almost 2 years to show you the light of liberal thinking, which by the way, your quoted comment hints at. I think underneath your tough conservative skin beats a honest and warm liberal heart. You're just pissed because of a few dollars being spend for the good of society vs. a cool war with bombs and all that. But that's another thread, and we'll eventually get there.

I'm just glad that they're simply writing stern letters, and not actually trying to pass laws about it.

We've already established that your perceptions are flawed - Here's what you should have gotten from that:

My support or disapproval of speed cameras is irrelevant to the discussion. What IS germane to the discussion is the point I made (and you missed): If you're gonna do something that violates my rights [4th Amendment, thank you], then I should be able to avoid it. Period. End of story.

It's none of your business what's on my phone, and if you think those four pinheads are "FOR" freedom, then you're as dense as they are. They're for more government intrusion, and you're more than happy to follow in lock-step.

The rest of your yammering made no sense, but there's just too much misperception to address.

IB: Agreed, but you know as well as I do that this is how pols "dip their toe in the water".

You know me, I'm all about the preemptive scorched-earth policy. Those are some big bellies, and their flops displace an awful lot of water.

Heh, that may be true, but I don't know many people who do a belly-flop more that once. It usually hurts them so much that they lack the desire to do it again.

Let them dig their own graves on this one, if they're so inclined.
