Ive been a member here for a while, learning what i can. At the same time, i have been looking for a 240sx to buy. I'm not very knowledgeable (as in, no experience) about cars in general. After like 3 months of looking, there is a 1991 champagne coupe for sale one street over from me. Ive talked to the guy that owns it, and there are a few small problems. At the same time, he has modified it a good bit. My parents always ask that before buying a car, we have a mechanic check it out. Anyway, my main problem is this:
The guys coupe was originally automatic, but the previous owner converted it to 5 speed almost 2 years ago. The car now needs a starter. I talked to the mechanic today without having the car up there, and he said that because the car was converted to 5 speed, if the starter wasnt also changed to a manual transmission starter, then there may be flywheel problems. How true is this? I havent heard that before, and in the 5 speed swap article, it doesnt mention needing a starter...
Thanks!

welcome you remind me of myself i was in your exact position about a year ago dont worry you'll learn quick if you try and just lurk the forums.

as for the whole flywheel and starter thing it sounds like bologna to me i've never heard of a 5spd starter if you really want to find out go to autozone tell them you need a starter for a 91 240sx (dont mention its auto or manual) If theyre are different starters for auto and manual they will ask you what you have, if not then there is no difference.

But becarefull this guy might be using this as an excuse cause the car might need a new flywheel or he may of totally f'd it up somehow and hes trying to blame it on the starter

alright i appreciate it. I might go up to autozone pretty soon, i guess it cant hurt. The owner of the car started it up for me, and there was a grinding sound. Ive never heard a "bad" starter before, so i dont know what that sounds like.. thanks for the advice!

Do what Klits said, and if it's true, that mechanic is totally trying to low ball you.

let me clear this up: the mechanic is a 3rd party, and he has no involvement in the actual sale of the car. What he told me has nothing to do with the seller, i have yet to talk to him about this. *RETITLED*
