So, I moved to Detroit.

Am I crazy? Maybe.

I left behind a pretty comfortable life, my family, lots of connections, and tons of spectacular friends. I'm now in an apartment right on the line where Warren meets Madison Heights on 11 Mile. I closed a couple businesses in St Louis this year and last year, left a job, and decided to pack my things and see if I could get into the auto business, electing to earn an MBA in the interim.

No planning, no job, just packed up my stuff and showed up.

Observations:
No Priuses! Thank God!
Beautiful weather
Jefferson/Lakeshore Dr is stunning
Diverse population which means tons of good, cheap food options
Comcast :(
This pavement isn't very Miata friendly
I think I've eaten too many coneys

Everyone thinks I've lost my mind. I'm encouraged by the (re)growth, friendly people, and spirit of optimism here.

I used to pack up and move on a whim all of the time. Always seemed to work out so long as you wanted it to put the effort into it- which I'm sure you will.
Plus, you've already got a few friends nearby between Torry and Seth. Did your brother move with you?

Rock on, brother. That takes serious balls to do, but you've got a good head on your shoulders and you'll succeed as long as you stay focused.

If you want to break into the Auto industry, you've definitely got the location part figured out. Belly of the beast. You could have always done Nashville and tried to unseat Ghosn (or at least a senior product planner or two), but better to crawl-walk-run.

Worked for me! It's hard to change when everything around you stays the same. You have a world of new people to meet, and you get to choose what kind of person you will be to those people. You are who you make yourself to be in the next year. Good luck!

This pleases...nay, confuses, me. :)

However, in the spirit of supporting my brother-in-shade for better or worse, richer or poorer, I bless thee thusly:

I find moving to a new area is liberating and you tend to learn and grow more as a person. Congrats on the move and good luck in your endeavors. Maybe I'll see ya if I ever take Torry up on visiting Detroit.

I get up that way fairly often. I'll have to visit the pants next time I'm there.

Its odd.. I've been in the automotive business my whole "adult" life (note the quotations... NOTE THEM!), yet I've never lived in Detroit.
It seemed fairly easy to get in. As long as you talk to the right people in the hiring phase, they tend to be amazed that you're a "car guy", which sets you above the rest of the competition.

I don't think you lost your mind at all. A fresh start can be very exciting. I'm sure you'll do fine there.

Was there no trailer available on 8 Mile?
