I hit a guard rail at 50mph due to hail. i was completely fine and my car wasn't totalled.

I just had to lol at that. You're currently in a Chrysler Sebring. If that's not the definition of "cheaply made" I don't know what is.

Thanks everybody.I never thought about looking for crash test on youtube.

I'm blowing down all her concerns with this car and she's running out of excuses.I think she is just stalling now.

Poppy c***. Look into the crash rating yourself... but my fit and finish is excellent and this car is not cheaply made.

Why is it so cheap? The TIIDA is originally a luxury car in Japan. Now, which is cheaper? Creating all new machines and molds for a car to be sold as an entry-level in other parts of the world? Or keeping that machinery, make some bits simpler (we get manual climate control as opposed to digital and our rear seats don't recline or slide forward/backward) and keep the same styling? Exactly.

Just please don't get the 1.6L sedan... trust me.

And if you should have any questions about Fit vs Versa... consider the pricing as demonstrated in this thread and scroll down to the jinormous post from me.

To return to the concern for safety, the V is pretty freaking safe.... Unless your mom wants to buy you a Hummer... I have a small child and am confident that this vehicle is safe. I have also had no issues with feeling my car was incapable such as on slick or snowy roads. And mine doesn't have ABS. (we don't want to go there - I don't like ABS, everyone else does, the new ones only have ABS.)

Good luck on swaying your mom.

Go back and read the OP's comments again, please. Doesn't seem like a used SE-R is what she's looking for. Nothing against the Sentra, just that she enjoys the Versa's appearance and obviously wants a safe economy car. Your advice is out of touch, as I don't recall her mentioning that performance was her main concern.

But since you brought up the Sentra, I never have warmed up to the Saturn-lite styling of the latest generation. Actually, I've felt everything after the B13 has been a downhill slide design-wise. Sure, the SE-R adds some oomph to the equation, but you can't polish a turd - acceleration and handling don't overcome a decidedly pedestrian exterior and interior design, at least not in my book. Plus, compact sedans don't really make much sense to me anymore anyway - a hatch makes much better use of the interior space.

you're right, a versa is much better suited for her. a base model CVT one would be perfect and much better than a used 07 Sentra SpecV

I don't know exactly what happened when you were getting your car, but based on your age I'm betting either you were getting it on a tight budget either because you were paying for it or because a guardian-type person gave you a spending limit/limited choices.

Answer me seriously, if you had been in a situation where you were offered to get the 1.8L engine, would you have taken it? The 1.6L V is not that much lighter than the 1.8L V and the engine will probably give out sooner as it has to work harder. (Yes, I realize that the TIIDA originally came in a 1.6L engine, but their speed limits are lower (50 - 60 instead of 65-75) and they drive for less years and likely less miles. Cars are pretty much junk after 5 years because of their ever-changing standards on emissions. One more reason Subarus are truly the die hard classics... just Google Subaru Crate Engine...)

This is terribly off-topic. In closing: I'm sorry I offended your 1.6L V, I'm glad you love your V, I'm glad you own a V, I pray you are always happy with your V. But if you have the option to spend money getting a stuffed V (with the better grade interior fabric and the soft door trim and the bigger engine) I think that you'll find it'll last much longer over all - inside and out. That is my not-so-humble opinion.

I got it because it was the cheapest car (msrp wise) and because my dad wouldn't co-sign on a loan for a used car. I also got it because it's a nissan and hopefully it will last me 6-9 years. I also found it more aesthetically appealing than a kia rio (which was pretty much my only other choice). If I had the budget of 16,000-20,000, I would have bought a used 350z instead of an upgraded V. Hopefully I'll get a 350 later on though after my insurance gets lowered from 300 a month (on a new 107 hp economy car with relatively high safety ratings, mind you).

ah, the joys of being "older".

Wouldja believe . . . my insurance doubled to $97 a month when I added my daughter to the mix as a secondary driver?

Hey, since we've both lived in Sask. and Ontario, what do you think of the two insurance systems?

Public vs. private? Insuring the human demographic vs. the vehicle demographic?

I'm also paying about $90/month here, but I decided to splurge for a really nice package policy with a low deductible and new vehicle replacement instead of depreciated cash value.

franco?

<< crickets chirping >> ...

What about everybody else? What is it like in your state, and what SHOULD insurance be based on? Should risk be assessed on the age and gender of the driver/owner of the vehicle, or should risk be assessed on the aggressiveness of the vehicle itself (power, historical involvement in street racing/bad driving/crashes) and the potential cost of repairing it?

In the province I live in now, it is based 100% on the vehicle, not the demographic of the owner. So an old farm truck will be a lot cheaper to insure than a new Altima Coupe, but the owner of that Altima Coupe will pay the same rate whether he is an 18 or 35 years old. Where I used to live, they would charge the 18 year old (especially males) a lot more based on historical data. Is that fair? Should it be both systems together?

I think Texas has a combination of the two? Driving my '91 escort LX with roughly seventy nothing hp I paid about $70 for liability. Right now I'm paying 250 for my versa (full coverage obviously) and that's after a lot of rebates. Originally it was over 300. (18 male)

After months and months of looking I just traded in my beloved Honda Civic for a Versa and one of the most appealing things about the Versa is the fact that it is super safe!! It has like a million air bags, reinforced doors and an energy absorbing steering column to protect passengers in a frontal crash. I feel safer in this car than in any other car I ever had.

Big doesn't always equal safe. In researching cars, I came across an article about the most dangerous cars and one of them was the Hummer, which next to a semi, is the biggest vehicle out there.

I used to own a '98 Civic HX coupe back in the day. It was a great car on gas, but that thing got broken into too often. I eventually got rid of it. What year was your Honda, and what trim?

Did you get the S or SL V, and what color? Do you plan to mod the V out such as tints, rims, sound system, exhaust?

I had a 2001 Civic EX. She was blue and I loved that car, but she was getting a lot of miles on her, which I know Honda's can handle, but I just got a new job, with more money, so I figured I deserved a new car. I have never had a brand new car until today.

I got a black S, because that's all the dealership in my small town had, but I did a lot a research on the Versa before I bought her and then I double checked when I got home. I think even though she's an S, she must have some other extras because the only thing she doesn't have is the CVT transmission. All the other SL features listed on the Nissan website, my car has.

I am thinking about getting the windows tinted but other that I haven't decided. I am just so thrilled to have a new car!

That's awesome. Make yourself at home on NICO and the V forums and enjoy the welcome. When you get the chance, create a signature and add some pics of your V or something so it's easier to differentiate from one another!

Depends on the accident.. little rich Ms. meets dump truck in V would be like Bambi meets Godzilla.

What's the harm in a boot up the backside outta your parent's house and a transit pass and bicycle..?
