So I take my G into the Nissan dealership for an oil change. They always do a fine job, and are decent technicians. When I dropped off the car, it had 40102 miles on it. When I picked it up, it had 40116 miles on it, and was short over 1/8 of a tank of gas. I was like WTF??? So I asked to speak to the service manager. He came out, and wondered why 14 miles were put on the car. I explained that whoever had been driving it, was pretty rowdy as well, since I had filled it at the station 2 blocks from Nissan. It was now short 1/8 of a tank. He agreed, and said that he would be asking some questions. I will say, at least the tech that drove it, didn't pussyfoot it and drive it like a sissy. I have a little bit of happiness that he drove it like he stole it, since he did.

We go over and the first guy we see is the guy who washed it. He swore he didn't drive it, and looked at his vehicle log. It had 40116 miles when he got it. He saved his arse by keeping a notepad with info about the car, whenever he receives one.

We then speak to the tech, who changed the oil. He swears that he didn't drive it. Then the head tech was asked where the oil change tech had been all afternoon. The head tech said that when he finished with the G, he had gone to the bathroom for a while. We went back and spoke with the oil change tech, and eventually he admitted to taking it for a joyride, out to, and down HWY 101 and back. I complimented him on the fact that he didn't drive it like a sissy, and he just looked at the floor.

Nissan topped off the tank, is giving me another oil change for free, and will refill the gas again when it is on empty.

I now would like to get some sort of data recorder that will record the highest RPM achieved, top speed reached, how quickly it was taken to that speed, how long it was held at that speed... etc. Anyone know where I can find such a thing?

I hate the a$$ took it for a drive!!! That's the biggest reason why I do my own oil changes and pretty much everything else not covered under warranty.

The local ford dealer had a cobra come in for work and one of the employees took it out for a joy ride and totaled it.

Cool. I also found the Greddy intelloigen informeter, for $275. It is easy to install, and has it's own LCD screen, so if this situation arises again, I can take it out, and show it to whom ever it is necessary.

He drove your car like he was a NASCAR driver... you were completely consumed and concerned that someone had put 12-25 miles on it... you took great pains to see what happened, who did it to and get to the bottom of it,........ and then you congratulate the guy??????? What's wrong with this picture?

I always bring a box of donuts to give to the techs and wait while I'm getting my oil changed. Takes 30 mins max, the car is never out of my sight and it comes out looking brand new.

You should have pushed for a lot more than 2 tanks of gas and a free oil change!

It really isn't that big oif a deal to me. If you see how I drive my car, he did nothing worse than I do to it on a regular basis, assuming that he didn't hit curbs, or take it off the pavement.

I congratulated him, because usually thay will take it for a spin, but not down the freeway at mach 4. At least he has balls. Not sure if he still has a job, but balls, yes.

It did piss me off a little bit, but it wasn't that big of a deal.

Well let me add my $.02.

So if I understand this correctly, you had an oil change and the tech took your vehicle out for a 14 mile test drive.Aside from burning your gas, I would have at least asked the tech how was the performance of your vehicle compared to others. Supose they did uncover a problem such perhaps a dirty air filter or something with the MAF sensor or something else you may have been unaware of. Wouldn't you have wanted to know about it?Even if the tech took the vehicle up to 80 MPG & the RPM's uo to 5k, SO WHAT!How else to check out the vehicle? The techs that work on them may not be able to afford one but they probably can tell you if something is wrong?

If I am about to purchase a new vehicle, I would like to test drive the vehicle up to about 80MPH to see how it handles. I can't see how the tech did anything wrong other than using some of your gas. He should have told you he was going to test drive it and perhaps asked you to go along for the ride.

Keep in mind that as great as the G35 is, it is still a depreciating chunk of metal. Lets not get too crazy over something that most of us will be getting rid of in a few years.

a depreciating chunk of metal......I know that I've heard you say this numerous times. You are keeping it 'real'. Keeping us focused on what's really important like saving for retirement & such. To alot of folks the car is more than a mode of transportation from point a to point b. It is an expression of who they are. An extention of who they are. Their pride & joy. Their hobby. Some take great care in their cars. Washing & waxing. Showing them off. Personalizing them. Posting on forums.I do understand what you are saying, but to some their cars are much more than a depreciating chunk of metal. I don't spend the time cleaning my cars like I did before 'married with children', but I do remember back when I got my first car. My 69 Mach 1.....I still have dreams about that car!!! 'a depreciating chunk of metal', well actually it's probably a big pile of rust by now.

So, in conclusion, I think that beancooker showed great maturity in handling the situation. my .02

I would do the same with smile on my face. Investigate who did it and ask his car key plus the lead tech's. "Eye for eye."

I would tell them you drove a piss out of my car now it is my turn. I'll drive your car for 14 miles. Plus the lead tech's car also because their is no way he did not know about it. Once I came back with the car if there is a possibility I would even do some donuts.

Hand the key back and ask SOOO how you feel now?

Well that is precisely the point I was trying to make.

Most younger males, myself included are focused on cars, woman, and booze sometimes not exactly in that order. Getting married, kids, a house, paying bills, perhaps trying to save for one or more college educations as well as retirement changes ones outlook on a car being an extension of who they are. As I've aged I enjoy driving a performance vehicle such as the G35 but I think the factory engineers did a pretty good job compared to what else is out in the market place. The $$$$ that some are spending may give them some personal satisfaction but IMHO that $$$ could give them more bang for the buck elsewhere. Again, just my opinion from an old farht. I figure if I can save one of the younger members from pissing away their hard earned cash on trying to get an additional 10hp which is really not needed then I feel good. To those that don't understand, you eventually will as you get older.

Good call on taking the tech's car for a spin. Maybe I'll stop by later in the week...

There were no problems with the car. The service report that they filled out, said everything was in perfect running condition. This report was filled out by the driver after he drove it for 14 miles.

A depreciating chunk of metal... Well yes. But I own a home, and my wife's car, have a great 401k program, and have invested twentyfold into "modding" my house as I have in my car, however I do take pride in my car, and love it like the child that I don't have. Especially after this car replaced a Maxima that I had dumped a s**t ton of cash into, which was given to my stepson.

Now back to the chunk of metal comment. You must have been gifted by God with a HUGE wank. See, I have a mini penor, and my depreciating chunk of metal makes me feel like John Holmes.

The oil change was $39.

Thanks for thinking I handled the situation maturely. I think I did also. 5 years ago, I would have been cited for assault. Seriously. Back then, I would have come unhinged, and beat him relentlessly.

It's not that big a deal, but the trust factor IS.We pay a lot of money for our cars, and then we entrust the dealership with them because they are supposed to be professionals and behave as such.

Some may see it as nothing, but I wouldn't ever take my car back there again. They broke the trust I had in them to do their jobs as professionals and one mistake ruined the relationship.

Had the tech asked me to take the car for a spin, I would have granted him it.
