Guess what. ASE test - passed averaging 25% below max (gg clogged CAT), but failed visual with AEM Short Ram (non Cali people can start laughing now).

Tech said he needs so see CARB sticker on it.

My question is, anyone know if AEM Short Ram got aproved by CARB ?

I really don't want to install my stock intake back.

Cold Air and Short Ram Air Induction Systems. AEM pioneered the Cold Air induction system for sport compact cars. The Cold Air and Short Ram air induction systems create more power than any other systems of their kind. The Cold Air induction systems relocate the filter outside of the engine compartment for a cooler intake charge. In most cases the Short Ram systems are an economical underhood alternative to the Cold Air systems. Every AEM air induction system is individually tuned in length and diameter, and features the highest standards of construction—we even guarantee them for the life of your vehicle. Every AEM system is either C.A.R.B. exempt, or pending C.A.R.B. exemption (50-state legal). Cold Air and Short Ram Key Features: Outperform every comparable intake system on the market. Every system is C.A.R.B. exempt, or pending C.A.R.B. exemption (50-state legal). Utilize a complete hardware kit with soft mounts for a guaranteed perfect fit. Available powder-coated in Blue, Red, Silver and a unique Maintenance-Free Polished finish. One-piece, four-layer, cotton-gauze AEM air filter eases installation and features an exclusive air horn design that improves performance. Comprehensive installation instructions, AEM decals and license plate frame included. Manufactured and assembled in the USA. Limited lifetime. Actual product may vary slightly from image.

yea, just imagine trying to pass with an SR or RB...doesn't happen! I'm still trying to find someone that will accept a payoff.

yeah well it's hard to find someone to pass smog for you via hookup now. took me a while, but i've found someone who'll pass my sr for me but with the new smog check II in effect with the dyno in the San Francisco area, it's really hard...gonna run me 300-500 for the hookup on smog. But yeah it don't mean a thing without that sticker or paperwork to say it's legal.

these laws are all bogus anyway, a lot of people fail smog without modifying their car and with regular maintainence.

Just spoke with tech support at AEM. This system is CARB exempt for my vehicle. YAY !!!They needed a proof of purchase from me and they are sending me the carb info.

I'm gonna go to the same smog shop and stick it to them.

That just settles that I would never ever live in California, can't even put on an intake w/o them getting mad at you. How do they smog a diesel vehicle? I've always wondered.

i'm in cali too and i've failed smog for the exact same reason: cone air filter, but the weird thing is i went to 3 different smog stations, 2 out of 3 didn't even care, but this one did, so i put back my old stock box, just a hassle... (i've driven my s13 for over 7+ yrs, that's why i had to go 3 times)...

and MOTOP, you sure about the 2.5 exhaust, header and 2.5 cat (if for whatever reason you MAY want to consider turbo in the future, gotta be absolutely positive cuz that's going to cost you in the long run if you do decide to change your mind)?

Diesels are exempt from the smog check program.

how is that fair? They puff out smoke like crazy. Guaranteed that a good running diesel will put more pollution in the air than any 240sx EVER will.

Actually, diesels run cleaner than gas powered engines, except for NOx.

The smoke from diesels is actually particles of carbon, which happens when the mixture is very rich. There are regulations for particle size, and big trucks (commercial) are sometimes checked, but mostly after they've been given a citation by the Highway Patrol or someone for excessive smoke. They actaully have a "gauge" they can hold up to look at and compare to the smoke coming out of the truck. Not very scientific.

I'm gonna revive this post to contribute to the community.

This is what all the hassle was about.

Now somebody needs to start photoshoping stickers for custom turbo kits. :ylsuper

no visual test in CT. They just check CO and HC. IM sure if you have and sr or rb you can pass as long as you have a cat because they just do a visual test for that
