Post

tonight i decieded to install a boost controller on my stock turbo ca18det.

i was messing around with the controller as it is a manual type with the highest setting set to 14psi on the stock sidemount. of course this was its peak and it would settle down to 12psi.

i knew that was a bit too much even though it is a bit cool at night in texas right now, so i turned it down to peak at about 12 and settle at 10psi.

the car seemed a decent amount quicker, or should i say not so slow, and later that night i went to wash the car.

after the carwash i left and gave it a nice wot in first and near redline i hear something similar to a intercooler pipe popping off. I pull over and check all the piping and could not find anything to be wrong. So i take off and the car will not make any boost whatsoever and i can hear a metal to metal noise as the rpms rise very slowly.

i know i shoudn't have taken the stock turbo past 10 psi on the stock sidemount and i'm not here to get a lecture on it. i got the entire car dirt cheap with the swap and i really didnt care if the turbo blew or not. more reason to upgrade egh?

what i would like to know is if any of you guys have used those ebay ssautochrome gt28 turbo kits for the ca18. I've seen kits recently as low as 750shipped to my door that include fmic with all piping including hot pipe, tubular manifold, turbo, manual boost controller, greddy knock off bov.

with all that i find it hard not to purchase the kit seeing as it comes with all that stuff. the only things that im wearie on the kit are the turbo and greddy knock off bov.

so hopefully someone here can give me some past experience with these kits and the ca and i can make my decision.

thanks

Apparently, they are not that bad, but I have heard of the turbos dying in less than 5k miles. Just get a SR20DET T25G .80a/r. You can get one for like $300. Then pick up one of the eBay FMIC kits (Like another $350-$400) then get a used BOV. There ya go.

I've always been a "you get what you pay for" kinda guy, so I would stay away from most of it. I do know though that the FMIC setup isn't bad as I used to have one, and I've also got the turbo mani as well. I can't imagine their turbo's being any good though and IDK what to think of the BOV's. A BOV isn't exactly a complicated peice of machinery....

i have a ebay fmic kit on my sr 240 and i love it especially since it was so cheap and nice looking.

it's the turbo that i'm really worried about.

maybe i'll just see what results slo-3dr gets

Can you buy new T25G's? I was cruising Nissansiliva.com and those guys are putting down wicked numbers with those turbos. I might got that route instead of a T28, but i thought T25G are not made anymore.

Most I've seen is 250rwhp on a T25G. GT28Rs I've seen break 290rwhp. The GT28R is bigger in every measurement, and has a BB CHRA.

i got my gt28r new because nothing beats a manufacturers warranty. it wasnt that bad, i think i paid about 750 for it. its supposed to be rated to 320hp at the crank or something, and i plan to make about 280whp out of it (not that ill leave the boost that high though).

i wouldnt buy a cheap turbo, its just asking for trouble. ive seen plenty of cars running these no-name turbos but i just dont know if they would last. i plan to keep my car for a long time so i couldnt risk something that would crap out in a few thousand miles.

i got my fmic on ebay. its made very well. internally finned tube and fin design. its not exactly the hardest thing to fab up, so i wasnt worried about it being of poor quality (and its not).

As float said, BOV's arent complicated machinery. It's not like you'll gain anything from them except for prolonged turbo life on larger turbo's. I picked up a knockoff greddy (type-s) last season and have yet to have any problems with it.

I picked up my SSQV second hand from an importer and paid a little over $150 for it. Seriously, just get whatever is cheap, because you should recirculate it anyway and that way if it leaks it won't matter.

i just thought i'd let you guys know that i didn't actually blow my turbo as i originally thought.

it turns out that one of the plastic end tanks on my smic had come undone making a huge leak.

i found this out after replacing the original turbo with two different t25's.
