So, I adjusted the ignition timing...

{TL;DR version: should I put timing back? or reset the ECU?}

Ok, when I bought my car a couple weeks ago, the guy had all the service records, including the recent timing belt change... :woot:

...also including a recent "tune up". He mentioned that an ignition coil had gone bad and was discovered during the tuneup, and it was replaced, but the ignition timing was not adjusted afterwards... (or something like that)... long story short, he said that he knew the ignition timing was now off after the "tune up" and that I would want to get that fixed...

So yesterday I hooked up the timing light. I had fully warmed the engine, parked on a level surface, AT in Park, and looked at the timing. It looked like it was set to 8 BTDC ... I had to fiddle with the inductive pickup on the wires to coil pack 1, and it still only flashes intermittently... Anyway, I loosened the CAS and turned it until the mark was on 15 degrees.

I read in a thread somewhere that you should put the pickup only on the "fat wire" going to the coil, so I tried that, but then I got too many flashes, including multiple timing marks about 10 degrees apart (15 and 25?) I also read that there is another wire somewhere intended for a timing light pickup, but I'm not yet sure where that is ("There is also a black loop on the PTU harness that is supposed to be used for this" - what is the PTU?)

So, anyway... I set the timing to 15, and drove around the block. Now I'm hearking knocking-n-pinging. :wtf2: This has me very worried.. :ohno: .Did I screw it up? should I put the timing back where it was? Or perhaps...

I also read that the ECU makes adjustments and sometimes needs to be reset after fixes... (this article mentions resetting the ECU after adjusting TB's). Does the ECU also make adjustments if it senses the timing is wrong? maybe I should pull the battery for 30 minutes and let it "forget"? I dunno. :gotme I will at least recheck the timing with the AT in neutral just in case that affects the timing measurement...

I will almost bet you have too advanced. That is what the pinging knocking sound is, hopefully. Ecu makes adjustments IF the knock sensor is working correctly and sensing knock, if everything is running right. If the CTS is bad it could be messing with the ecu thinking its not at Operating temp. The other wires is either by the fuse box on the driver side or PTU, do not use that. Just use the one that goes to the #1 coil. Very important, make sure car is warmed up to operating temp, otherwise it will show advanced and RPM is correct at idle.

PTU- Power Transmitting Unit. Normally this is the black or silver box on the passenger side timing belt cover. Some people relocate it to right behind the driver headlight in the engine bay or by the air filter box/pop charger.

You may have to peel back some of the loom and get the fat white? wire in there by itself. Make sure you have a constant flash. Also make sure the gun you have doesn't have a dial on it to where you can advance it. If it does, put it at zero and use the mark on the pulley at 15º BTDC. If you still have issue, something is wrong, check the ecu for codes. Keep us posted.

Personally, I would forget about trying to use the low voltage wires. Get a "standard" 9mm coil wire. Unbolt the coil for cylinder #1. Lay the coil on top of the plenum so it's grounded (wedge it in). Connect the 9mm coil wire to the plug down in cylinder #1. Crimp the other end of the 9mm plug wire so it will fit into the coil and hold contact. Then use the 9mm wire for your inductive pickup. Also, I always mark the CAS before I adjust anything. Helps if you have to back trace any steps afterwards.

This is what I'm thinking... but the timing light said 15 degrees... So, I'm thinking either I connected the pickup wrong, or the ECU has adjusted it... ...or something else is wrong and it wasn't sitting at idle like it should have been...
check the ecu for codes. Keep us posted.
Is there a guide for getting codes from the ECU? I could swear I saw a thread where it was mentioned how to do it...

I realized I should have posted this in the technical forum instead of general... So I started a new thread with my next set of questions over there...
