Yea follow the top part of that guide. Just ignore the chain tensioner material. But its really easy to do, just tedious. Make sure you put the crank at TDC which is the second mark from the left, so count left to right on the pulley, and it'll be your second one. After that stab the CAS in like they say in that guide.

ok... so just scope the crank pully and line it up? Then line up the small marks on the CAS and put it in the hole?

Its not required to remove the valve cover correct?

ok... im messin with my car right now and Ive been looking at the crank pully when im turning it with a wrench. Looking from the front I wanna line the second to left? People refer to the left side of the car as being the drivers side. I just wanna make sure this left to right deal is if your looking fromt the front.

so, with looking at it fromt he front:

I can feel the compression as I turn the crank. If you line the second from left mark up as you feel compression that should be TDC on the 1st cyl correct?

seems like sometimes somethings off, idk.

Right now I have an open down pipe and my cars loaded with fuel. Seems like the car tried firing and BOOM! damn was it loud. Neibors came running lol.

Anyways, idk if what im doing is correct cause i dont seem to be having great results.

any other tips?

If you're looking at your motor from the front, it'll be the 2nd mark from the passenger side...To make sure your motor is at TDC on the first cyl. pull the coil and spark plug out and put a long screwdriver in there, you'll notice when it's at TDC. Then look at where your mark on the crank pulley is in relation to the motor...

It's not hard, if you have an FSM it would help out alot. I can send the file if you'd like...

Look at your car so that the driver is on the right side, and the passenger is on the left.

^lol... i think thats more confusing then anything else.

Anyways. I just pooped the valve cover off real quick.Lined up the mark and made sure the 1 cyl valves were in the close position (being the compression stroke)

Slid my CAS back in there. Put the valve cover on.

Got all my **** situated.

Noticed my water pumps got a small leak around it! kinda gay but whatever for now.

Anyways. Started her up, fired up pretty easy once I got the timing **** figured out.

I got a vid of the first time ive ever started this motor. Its open down pipe and sound TERRIBLE. Runs like **** and I couldnt figure out why, it was like 6 so I ate some dinner and just said fug it for tonight.

I was here sittin on my couch thinking what could cause it and i COMPLETELY FORGOT to put the O2 sensor in the down pipe lol. That could be a major reason for its poor running.

Anyways, yeah this is my first SR swap ive done, no help from anyone accept for alittle hint here and there on the web. Fairly satisfied so far. Just wanna finish my exhaust so it doesnt sound like a tractor and I wanna get it running smooth.

Like I said, ive done this ALL by myself so no help from anyone. Jobs difficult trying to guide a transmission and motor in by yourself, hard to diagnose problems by yourself, and its hard to bleed the clutch and brakes witch is another reason for it to be still sitting in my garage. I need a partner to do that.

Anyways, ill post up a vid when I get a chance. I know its running rough but what do you expect... first start up EVER!!!!!

-BTW, thanks for the help guys-

Connecting the O2 sensor won't change much. How is running like crap? As is it bogs, idles really rough, what? Double check ALL your hose clamps and run a boost leak test to find any leaks that you could potential have. This can cause TERRIBLE idle if its bad enough.

Think idols pretty decent but VERY ROUGH. Idol is constant and not jumpy just that its rough and the motors trying to flop all over the place.

I deffinetly need to go through all the vac lines and check stuff out. Also just gotta make sure about that o2. The o2 sensor should effect the way it runs, right now its reading just plain old oxygen cause its just hanging twords the back of my motor.

Im gonna start it up again monday and play around with it. If I can get it running good ill see if I can get someone to help bleed my shiz and go take it for a drive.

Congrats man... was in same boat. Well sorta. The wife helped me put the motor (she pushed the crane while i guided it in). Just a thought (not trying to discount your ability) Did you check the motor mounts? I did the same job here w/an auto to manual swap and I can tell you sometimes I was delirious working on it. Had to go back around and check all kinds of stuff just to be sure. When I got mine started the idle rode up for a few seconds and then dropped down and then leveled off at about 1200, but I don't have the PS or AC belts on. (still waiting on PS adjustment bracket). Good luck with it. Keep us posted on progress.

First off, Thanks.

Second off, I got some time to work on it this morning before I gotta go to work.

There are many things that lead to its rough running. Every time I did something it helped just that much more. Currently its running excellent. None of my gauges are working unfortunatly but the engine is running stronge and smooth.

heres what I did.

-Ground wire on the back of the head-Put a gauge on my loose vac line that I had ran into the cab-Both 14mm nuts on the bottom sides of my motor mounts were loose still-Tightened my ECU plug

Every time I did one of these things it ran alittle better, the killer was the ECU plug. I had it running well and was like... wtf could this be? I ended up shutting my door and it ran good for a millasecond.

I instantly realized it was the ECU plug cause earlier when I was working on it I had just kinda threw it on there.

My cars so appart that I still cant drive it. Maby by wed/thrus I can take it for a spin. Gotta get back under it and make sure EVERYTHINGs tight.

Again, ill post pics/ videos of its current state when I get off work cause maby then ill have time to wait for the vids to load.

Thanks again and heres a somewhat recent pic of my engine bay.

Allright, heres how it goes.

I started this build and was planning on running this car basically stock. Decided to not use a side mount and started fabbing it up to do a fmic.

After that I ended up getting the turbo I have now. Top mounted it, made IC piping for it, ect.

If you look I also have a stock WRX bov on this setup lol.

It all keeps changing as I work on it and the stock MAF isnt planned to be used.

I have an HKS SSQV and some new stainless I need to weld up for my new IC piping. Also gonna be getting an Apexi Power FC and some deatchwerks injectors soon.

This thread started out as more of a "what can I do to get it running right" thread. Im not by any means planning on keeping this setup for ever.

This is the FIRST time ive started the car EVER! thats why im so excited.
