I have always been kinda intrigued by the cutouts on older cars and how mean they sound and how they get better low end torque with them open... I recently met someone with "electric cutouts" on his 350z. Granted its twin turbo and its mainly for when he races due to the pressure in his pipe. I got to looking at it and i swear to you that i looked like a throttle body with a headlight motor to move it. I found a few kits online and I am considering buying two of them at some point in time to put behind my cats but before I do, I figured I would consult the NICO Gods first haha.

Few questions to start.
<1> Will it improve MY torque since my car relies on pressure every where?
<2> What kind of negative effects can it have on the Q?
<3> If I were to take on the task of making one... is there a way to make it air tight in one direction until it opens if I use a THB?
<4> Could I get away with using a similar system to a window switch to control how "open" it is?
<5> Has anyone ever used a cutout on a Q to date?

These are just a few of the many questions i have... I think that if I build this for real, I'll need to spend some time on the R&D of it before I jump in headfirst. My biggest fear is that I will have an exhaust leak around the valve if I make it... or that once open it will do damage to my motor OR lose back pressure and it become counter productive other than a beastly sound.... Suggestions, tips, advice... please let it start flowing!!!! Thanks!!

Andy

Aluminum throttle body ain't gonna last long in those temperatures - and neither is a headlight motor.

In the truck industry, plenty of manufacturers make exhaust brakes - which look a lot like an exhaust cut-out. They use cast iron for the housing. The actuator is usually an air cylinder, because an electric solenoid won't survive the kind of temperatures it would see.

What exactly, are you trying to accomplish by doing this?

Paying $1K plus isn't unheard of. Solid, reliable hardware ain't cheap!

Most diesel trucks already have an onboard air supply, so the cylinder is usually air-driven.

Another consideration: How ya gonna mount your cutouts? Where on the vehicle is there enough room to squeeze them in?

well when i was working on my car a long time ago, i noticed my oem cats were bad (made it over heat they were so stopped up) so i cut them off and drove a mile to the shop and had some put on that are magnaflow high-flow. they are about 1/4 the length of the oem cats. then i had my two resonators removed and left the suitcase muffler on the back. When i heard it open header, it was really really awesome although i had no back pressure. Now since i have the two heat sheilds under my car where the cats used to be and have about 12 or so inches left over, I am going to mount them behind the cat so that i still get enough back pressure but i can get that mean sound i once heard. Flip a switch and tada its closed.

Here is one example of what I am going for... granted it is on a dodge, its the same principal.

Also, here it is installed.

I have found MANY electric cutouts including factory installed on the ford svt raptor... I like the thought of fabricating them from start to finish but if i have to purchase them, then so be it. I just want to do something that not too many people have done here in my city, PLUS i love the way this v8 sounds... never driven a v8 prior to this car because if they have an exhaust they crackle and sound like crap but this one is a very crisp, very distinct sound. <3

so to answer you question, i want the sound of open header, with the back pressure of side pipes and the ability to go back into "Q" mode for lack of a better way of putting it... after all, it is named after a Q-Ship... gotta stick with the sleeper image some how ;)
