I run snow tires every year (on separate rims for ease of switching).
I just picked up a used set on kijiji (3 winters ago).
Can't even tell you the brand, but I don't think it will make much difference what kind they are.
Any winter tire will be better than all seasons.

Ive run Goodyear DuraTracs and Ive run Blizzacks

one is pretty much a mud tire and the other one is a conventional winter tire

The DuraTracs were awesome in loose powder and deep snow up to 8" but were absolutely useless in slush / compact snow /icy conditions

The Blizzaks are much better for 90% of the winter driving, not so great in deep snow because the tread isn't aggressive enough to dig out the snow

i found a fairly decent price on a set of Blizzak DM-V1's they handle both Snow and Ice and still able to grip the dry pavement, Also looking at Michelin's X Ice series as well

Agreed. Running Bridgestone Blizzaks on a set of older 17" Konig wheels. This is the first set of "winter tires" I have ever purchased - went with Blizzaks because they were on sale and had good reviews. Definitely better than any all season I have had.
