Allright so I am having some problems with my SR and i just need some help trying to pin point the problem exactly. The engine it self apparently has low KM's and is in good condition in my mind as i did a compression and leak down test before purchasing the motor.

Everything was fine for the first bit... now on start up it seems that there is valve knocking as if there is a lack of oil it lasts for less then 10 seconds then goes away, but it seems to be getting worse.

Also now when ever i come to an intersection and down shift it puffs out smoke as it returns to idle. It doesnt smoke when i take off or on start up but if it is revved up and left to return to idle it smokes.

The car is now parked until i can get this sorted out.

Any suggestions on what this could be?

Thanks

Craig

The smoke seems to be white, there is a large build up of carbon on my muffler also.

Could this be a possible cause....

Some how my valve train being deprived of oil (which is causeing the valve ticking) has lead to my valve seals drying out, causeing smoke?

How could my valve train become deprived of oil?

Any suggestions?

Mine went from mild white smoke in freeway traffic, and went to more white smoke at deceleration keeping it in gear, to mild blue smoke at startup and lots of blue smoke at decel to me checking the turbo and to finding out how much shaft play i had to replacing the turbo to not having any more smoking problems to finally typing a period.

Leaking any oil?How often do you need to add oil?Does your idle and or boost hold well?

I've got some bad news for you....the smoke you're seeing soudns most like it is your turbo. Mine did the exact same thing. Floor it and you NEVER see smoke...decelerate, or sit at a light for about 1 min and smoke will come out.

In terms of the noisy head, could be a lot of things. Your head might be out of shim and your rockers might be grooved thus making the head noisy. You also might have low oilpressure from a bad oilpump that might take it longer to build pressure to quiet the head. You also might be low on oil.

should be good to start with.

hope this helpsmark

Well thanks for the input guys i really dont think its the turbo though for some reason. I had my turbo off before i stored it for the winter and there was very little shaft play ect... but it could be something like seal i guess im not sure.

Im gonna have to take it to my mechanic and see if he can figure out what the valves are doing. The oil isnt low thats for sure. How often do oil pumps go? Is it a common thing?

I had the same thing happen. It turns out my catch can was clogged up and wasent allowing the case to vent. Check that out first. Then if that is ok. Take the hot pipe off your turbo and see if there is alot of oil on the inside of the pipe. If there is, it could be the turbo. If that is good. Get a compression check done. Good luck bro.....I feel your pain.

I will check the catch can, sounds way to easy but hey its worth a try. Im gonna check my oil pressure this weekend if i have a chance and make sure it is good. From reading old post it sounds like it is unlikley my oil pump but might be my pan due to having a couple dents which might affect the pick up.

Fingers crossed i guess.

Thanks for the help and keep the suggestions coming!
