Driving to and from the lake - on a relatively hot day, steady at about 120 km/h. I started to notice well not notice, but smell then see the steady stream of smoke billow from my shift boot. Now with the aftermarket shift knob on there, I've been too lazy to zip tie the boot closed so it does hang loose around the entire uh "shaft of the knob" (Yeah I know that sounded bad).

In anycase, I'm having trouble finding exactly what's causing this problem, the smell is..something I can't place my finger on, but it streams from the shift boot quite steadily, and I'm getting a little afraid here as you can imagine. The car didn't suffer from any performance problems nor did it stutter or hesitate to accelerate as per usual. Is this a problem with my transmission? What should I be doing to diagnose this?

Thanks guys.

Is there any reason the transmission fluid is burning? or is this just a regular matinence sort of thing?

i have the same problem..... only when its gets really hot/and or i run it kinda hard for an extended period of time..... i read that a possibility is that the transmission seals are bad and that some transmission fluid is leaking onto the exhaust and the smoke is coming back up through the shift boot area... hope this helps...ps post up here if you find out what it ends up being... so i can fix it...

my 240 did this too, but mainly around corners, for me it was transmission fluid comming up out of the shifter hole in the transmission and burning on the exhaust. get the car in the air and take out the top fill screw thing with a half inch breaker bar or ratchet. and fluid that comes out is not needed.
