I have a problem but I think it would be best if someone took a look at it other than me. Im kinda new to some of this stuff. Here is whats going on. Beware its kinda long.So a couple of months ago my engine started to smoke. I determined that it was the turbo because the smoke was coming from the turbo area. I didn't have enough money to replace the turbo at the time. Now I do, but something else is now bothering me. Now that the temperatures around here are about 90 degrees the temp gauge is going crazy. I also discovered that after a little while my anitfreeze was almost gone. So I refilled it. No more over heating. But there is still lots of smoke. It smells like oil but it almost looks like its not coming from just the turbo area. It doesn't smoke all the time. Its only when Im stopped at a light for a long time. I just think that if someone took a look at it, they would instantly know what was going on. Any body in the columbus area care to take a look at it for me?

Sounds like your valve seals to me or you could have excess oil in your exhaust from your previous turbo dramas. If it is valve seals, you'll need to pull the head for a head job. Or it could just be another crappy turbo, especially if it's another T deuce and a quarter.

I have yet to replace the turbo. Before I replaced it I just wante to know if that is the problem. If its not then I won't replace it right now and I will use the money to fix whats wrong. It just seems like more smoke than before.

what color is the smoke?

if you're losing coolant maybe through some freak accident its slowly leaking past the seals (if any?) around the turbo for the coolant and thats whats burning?

Here's a lesson to learn , so pay close attention. CA18s are old (as discussed before) so we must expect the unexpected if and when they occur. Those T25 turbochargers can only take so much and age is evidently working against them. Basically what has happened with your car is not so much the valve seals, but your turbocharger's seal has cracked and it's allowing both oil and coolant to make it out of the turbo and into the exhaust stream. It's common for this to happen and happened to every T25 I've ever owned.

Just replace the turbo and work from there, all I know is that next time I'm replacing a turbo ,the motor is coming out.

or the coolant lines on the turbo are just loose and leaking water out on to the turbo , its smoking mostly under the hood also , am i not correct? see i never did get that small problemn figure out, its not new i didnt have time to get back behind that manifold before you drove it home, thats one of the main reasons i wanted to wait till the next weekend.

I was just going to say what Jon said. It's possible the coolant connections to the turbo are leaking and it's burning there. Some investigation with a flashlight should help...

The tiny T25 likes to crap itself a lot and shatters it's cartridge causing the effects I mentioned earlier. Always go after the turbo 1st as It is the oldest and most frail of all the compnents.

To expand on what Dee said, the ONLY reason that the coolant lines are there are for AFTER the motor has been turned off. Due to convection it draws the heat away from the turbo. As long as you have a proper cool down time, there is really no need for them.

The T25 that came with my motor took a shyt on the first test drive, I was actually concerned because the smoke out the exhaust was white, opened the hood and saw white puffs around the manifold and it smelled like a burnt clutch. Taking that shyt off was a *****, you need lots of patience and good tools. Got an SRT25 for now, its boost happy.

on the note of valve stem seals... they're not that difficult but they're tedious as hell to do. i helped a friend do a valve steam seal replacement on his DSM a few nights ago. It was my first one. I love working on cars. :ylsuper

I did them in my CA head... took awhile, but yeah, they're easy once you do one:)
