hey guys im from new zealand, just wondering if u could help me out, iv put a garret Gt2876r on my Ca18det, and wen u let off the gas after giving it a bit, a puff of white smoke comes out, u can smell burnt oil smell. its a brand new turbo and iv used all the standard oil and water lines. i know these turbos dont like to be on much of a angle, the flange is basically level. hope this makes sense, any help would be awsome. thanks

Check and make sure there isnt a kink in the oil return. I believe that can cause those exact problems.

the turbo already came with a restrictor already in it. does this mean its wrong? and the turbo drain has a bend in the pipe where it goes back to the sump but it stil retains its diameter.

If it has the built in restrictor your fine. Does it smoke anytime else, like during idle?

If all checks out and theirs no kink in the return you may be looking at Valve Stem Seals. Usually when letting off the gas is when the motor creates more vacuum. If the Valve Stem Seals are worn then the vacuum the motor creates will pull oil through the valve stem seals and cause smoke.

If they are the seals than ur lucky its about a $20 fix in parts if you do it yourself, its just a pain in the *** to change though.

Yeah, garrett GT turbos come with the proper restrictor built in. I really don't understand why people keep saying to use one. Garrett Gt turbos have always come with a restrictor, so its not like its new.

Even the smallest kink can apparently cause the problem you are describing, so I am told. Another member of ours had the same exact problem with his CA and a new gt28 no less than a week ago.

Dont forget I had that problem :P thats why I keep saying check oil return a doi doi.

But if its not doing it during idle than might look somewhere else BISH.

Whoa wait, so it didnt smoke before you put the turbo on right? Its gotta be turbo related. For some reason its got high oil pressure and its leaking past the seals.

yeah thats right it didnt smoke before i put the turbo on, then i put this turbo on and it starts smoking. i have just used a flange and pipe coming out the turbo for the drain, and then a bent hose going over the bit of pipe coming out of the sump. from mermory the bit of pipe coming out of the sump was a bit smaller than the pipe coming from the turbo could this be a problem, im only talkn about a little bit.

Does your setup look like this?

On mine the pipe from the turbo comes down lower and there is ore of a bend in the hose but the hose still pretty much keeps it diameter.

I would think that setup should drain ok. I run a gt3076r on the RB and I still put a restrictor on it. These engines make some crazy oil pressure, esp when cold, and an extra restrictor won't hurt anything.
