Hi

I have a 1995 Pathfinder. I took it to get some body work done and a respray and when I picked it up I saw that the exhaust was throwing out smoke. The smoke was dark gray and the exaust was dripping unburnt fuel.

The guy in the workshop said it would clear on the way home and he hadnt touched the engine.

It hasnt cleared. A local mechanic said I need to change the injectors and fuel regulator but he wasnt 100%?

It was perfect before I had body done and maybe they knocked something.

Dont want to spend too much on replacing injectors (as he said) if it could be simpler. Anyone any ideas where I can start?

Thanks in advance.

I dont think its even possible for gas to get through the combustion chamber without burning if you have spark.... My first priority would be to find a source of the gas leak

Im assuming the car would be throwing a CEL aswell

Id be kickin down doors at the body shop though lol

Thanx WOT

Yup check engine light is on. Trawling on the net does seem to back up the mechanics theory of bad fuel injectors, or something to do with them.

Could it be that they have knocked the computer and its keeping injectors open?

Bit of a d!ck when it comes to mechanics to be straight. Found the workshop manual online and downloaded this morning. After half hour reading I've got a headache. Respect to all the guys who do this for a living.

Trouble is I'm economically squeezed so if I can give it a go myself I will. If not I'm gonna have to park up for a while and do some O/T.

Cheers

Do you have a scanner? Knowing the code the engine is throwing will will get this diagnosed fast.

Ive really never heard of fuel getting through the combustion chamber though unburnt and making it all the way tot he back of the exhaust, youre sure its not just water dripping out of the end?

Hi WOT

No no scanner here around. I'm working over in Liberia and one place did have but it broke.... !!

I've been looking at the manual and will try and work out the codes on the ECM that they say is under the seat.

The liquid thats dripping from the exhaust definately stinks of fuel but it could be a bit of condensation or whatever thats mixing in with the exaust smoke. Whatever it is its 100% reaking of fuel.

I drove it back to the house the other day and noticed that when I started, took a few turns, it cut out when I put my foot down. When I gentle acelerated it was OK.

Again the more I investigate the more likely its a problem with the injectors sticking open. The question now is why? It was all sound as a pound a week ago before the body work.

Hi

Just an update. We are nearly there. I took the car to a pretty good garage and they diagnosed the problem as needing all the injectors replacing plus the fuel regulator.Trouble was they wanted to rip me off. Charge was $201.00 for an injector, or $1206.00 for six plus $170 for regulator. $24.00 for a spark plug.Decided to take it elsewhere (charged me $120.00) to do that. I bought my own injectors for $40.00 each and had them replaced. New plugs, oil change filters etc. and its stopped smoking. RESULT

Unfortunately the engine check is still on so I am still investigating.

So thanx WOT for being the only one to at least respond. I will update when I get the light off.

Search for the FSM on here. It'll tell you how to get the codes without a scanner.

Patience. IF you have fixed the problem, the CEL will go out by and by.
