I recently installed an Oil Cooler mounted in the passenger fender w/ a remote filter mounted vertically as opposed to it being on its side. I filled the lines and cooler with oil prior to start up and I'm running a total of 4.5 quarts 15W50 Mobil 1. While driving the car, I never could get up to normal operating temperature maybe it due to not have a thermostat along with a Koyo Radiator and Flex-a-lite fans (fans never came on). After driving the car, I would get smoke coming from the exhaust with the smell of burning oil during idle. I would rev the engine up and the smoke would stop. I tried correcting the issue by installing a 170deg thermostat with 50/50 coolant. I warmed up the car and now it gets up to temp, but once in a while I will continue to get the smoke. The measurement on the dipstick continues to remain the same (full) and no leaks anywhere. Did I really cause some damage? Or am I running low oil pressure? WTF?I will soon install an oil pressure and temp gauge to determine whether if I'm running correct pressure. I will be using a mech. gauge, will the port in my remote filter be a location to get an accurate reading? Thank you for your input.

Did you prime oil through the cooler and filter before attempting to start the car?

If not you could have caused some serious damage.

To prime:

take out all your spark plugs to relieve pressure in the cylinders, disconnect the line from the cooler -> block and put it over a tray... crank under oil comes out. This can take a LOT of cranking, and if you just start 'er up, it could be a good while before your motor sees oil pressure... it takes a whole lot of not very long to **** your motor if you have no oil pressure.

Also, i would never attempt to run an oil cooler/filter relocate without first installing a oil pressure gauge. What happens if a rock flies up into your oil cooler on the highway? I've seen it happen first hand. Without a pressure gauge your SOL.

Also running no thermostat = bad and can cause overheats... i'm pretty sure you can do your own search on why when it comes to this subject.
