smokin 240 (not a good thing)

:help my '96 240 (145K miles) is emitting white smoke when I accelerate after being at idle for about 5 minutes or more. After the initial cloud of smoke clears, she doesn't seem to smoke anymore, but she is using a little more oil than I think she ought to, I'm feeding her about a quart a month. Sounds like a new set of rings is in my future, anybody have any other ideas?
