Boosted fine for one day. Started it up today and it spooled up once before it started grinding, lost boost and smoke started pouring from the exhaust.

I have the JGS oil lines and a restrictor. I'm wondering if the restrictor could have starved it for oil. I've heard of oil coking and causing a problem but my turbo is water cooled and I use Mobile 1. Also, I drove it at least a half mile without boosting and then let it idle for about 20 sec when I got home. Can a water cooled turbo coke up the oil?

That is quite possible. A friend of mine's KA-T got owned because of it.

Garrett T3 Super 60. I'm just wondering what caused it. It's a water cooled turbo so oil coking shouldn't happen. I'm wondering if it is correct to use a restrictor.

Then again, this was bought from a guy on Ebay. He had a lot of good feedback and it sounded like he did a good job re-building. It did whine quite a bit though, I'm wondering if it was not properly balanced.

Removed the turbo today. Oil lines seem to flow copious amounts of oil and there is no sign of any burnt up oil or blockage. The only problem is that now there is a lot of shaft play; enough for the wheel to just barely scrape the housing.

Looks like I got burned by a shoddy Ebay rebuild. I'm going to write the guy and see what he might be willing to do but unfortunatly I bought it a long time ago.

It sounded like the guy knew his stuff too. I guess this should be a lesson to us all. I'm going with reputable professionals only in the future.
