smoke stop

Now this probably sounds like a noob question. Has anyone ever used the "stop smoke" or "no smoke" stuff? I know that the real procedure for burning oil would be to rebuild and blah blah but i dont have the money right now. Is the "smoke stop" stuff you get at auto zone or w/e bad? It looks like caramel. I put in a bottle tonight and it honestly has stopped the smoking but should this be something I should stay away from? Thanks
